Just so another topic doesn't get started up, I'm going to post what weapon I use, and the reasoning. For the longest time (two days of playing non-stop seems like a long time, anyway) I was using a balanced arming sword I managed to pick up in a fight. It was good because it was a one handed sword that had decent base damage, but could also thrust for piercing damage. I remember reading somewhere that piercing damage is good for piercing through armor. Well, now I've come across a balanced military pick, and this thinkis even better. It's nearly as fast as the sword, but it does all its damage as piercing. No need to thrust. This means that when riding on a horse, I can swing for piercing damage. No helm can stop my wrath, now. It's also faster than the morningstar, so if I lose my horse, I have a pretty quick dueling weapon, too. Once reason I was quick to get rid of the arming sword is because I was having a hard time thrusting with it. I think thrusting is kind of hard to do right now. I wonder if the attack direction arrows are centered on your opponent's face or torso. It should be the face, either way.

That's why I go to 2 handed blades as soon as I have the strenght. More reach, more damage inflicted and with enough agility those babies swing like crazy. Only real downside I find is against misiles.
I couldn't help but comment on this, because it's one of the reasons I love this game so much. Something as simple as, "a two handed weapon means you can't carry a shield, which means you have no defense versus ranged weapons" is the kind of thing RPG designers tend to be too timid to explore. I don't know why. It's like everything has to be balanced with a linear slide-rule of numbers and figures. When it comes to using real-world counterparts as balancing elements, they won't do it. It would be cool if some maps come out in the future that have more strategic locations for archers, ie: cliffs that only have slopes on the rear side. This way archers can fire upon enemies without fear of reprisal. Would make for some good random mountain maps. Heh. I'd be glad to have my shield on a map like that!
[Edt: I know, I know, I'm an edit FREAK.]
I have to add this quote from another thread to cement my point.

-You with a sword (no shield), can't beat an archer from a distance, unless you're lucky.
-You with a sword, can't beat a guy with a joust (on foot), since you can't reach him (and he's running backwards).
-You at close distance, with a bow, can't beat two guys with shields and swords.
Basically, he was complaining about all the things I like most about this game. The times in the tourney where it is almost impossible for you to win. In fact, in these occurences, you usually get about 30-60 seconds before you are annihilated.
And I love it. I love going into the tourney when I know I might get stuck in a fight where there is only about a 5% chance that I will win. You know why? Because when you
do win in those situations, it is extremely, extremely satisfying. Also, I simply cannot understand what it is about video gaming that has taught gamers that they should always win. Maybe it's the explanation for why most online gamers you run into in the big, public online games are such smacktards. People can't stand losing. They think it's the end of the world. If they lose a fight, what do they do? Okay, it's time to reload and do it again. Also, some people think that it should be only all about skill. What about when a 2h swordsman is fighting an archer? There should be no special advantages for either. It should all be based upon player skill. Man, that's spoiled video gamer brat smacktard baby talk!! Dry the piss stains off of your loincloth and charge that archer like a man, soldier! You have about a 20% chance of living, but if you take him out, you'll be a hero.
Playing this game on iron-man and getting beat down several times has been quite enjoyable for me. I won't ever forget my experiences as a newbie wielding a piece of crap and wearing a piece of crap. I made the best out of my crap and now I have some real shiny crap.
