Question about firendly lords following you

So, I play this game constantly, and I'm clearly a M&B addict.  I've been playing it since one of the earlier betas, in fact.  In 1.010-11, I've done just about everything you can do.  But believe it or not, I've NEVER gotten a lord over, say, 5 or 10 reputation.  Wanting to know what it was like, I befriended a lord and got him up to 30.  Now he doesn't tell me where to stick it whenever I ask him to follow me.  However, I'm confused.  When you're a marshall, you can tell lords to follow you and then order them to go back to what they were doing.  But it seems that my new "friend" has no such option.  Will he be following me for the rest of the game?  That would be a little annoying, and I'd also hate to throw our faction off strategically if he wasn't free to defend his castle.  Can someone tell me if he eventually goes his own way?

Sorry if this has been discussed but my limited imagination couldn't come up with any search term other than "follow," so it seemed more practical to start a new thread.

most people complain that the lords they asked to follow decided to go off on their own too soon, so i dont think you have to worry
