Question about companions!

Hi

I just have one question that I haven't been able to find the answer to in any of the companion threads here, even the companion guide, and the wiki articles have left it out.

If a companion leaves your party because of quarreling/general dislike of affairs, can you recruit them again later?

Yes, they will reappear in taverns again. However, if the same conflict that caused them to leave in the first place is still present, they will leave again. They will also keep whatever equipment you gave them for when you pick them up again.

You're absolutely sure? You've been able to pick them up yourself again in your own game?

Even Matheld who says she's going back to Nordland to get revenge against her brother-in-law when she leaves?

Even Matheld, yes. They all have an excuse for returning to you, usually the lack of money. She'd probably say she didn't get enough men and barely escaped with her life after fighting her late husband's brother or something like that.

Yes I've gotten them to return in my own game... Maybe they change it with an update, I haven't done it recently, but it has worked for me in the past

Very little in the game changes permanently. The only irreversible changes I know of are when a faction is destroyed, a lord leaves and when someone is married.

What happens with kings when the faction is destroyed?

That's comforting to hear, thank you

The king disappears permanently.

On the topic of permanency, what happens if you lose a battle with a bandit ambush (in a village or town) or with the belligerent drunk?

You lose a fair bit of money (5-10% of your total maybe?) if the former. It says something like "the bandits grab your purse and run off as your companions come running".

As for the latter, I don't know, probably something similar.

I intentionally lost to a drunk once just to see, it says something about the patrons picking you up off the floor and you barely surviving... I forget what exactly.

Must be pretty sober to crack down a player like that. IRL the worst he could do is puke on you.

he's not really a drunk, he's actually a hired assassin who is pretending to be drunk (at least sometimes).

you will get a dialog about him pulling a dagger out during the commotion and preparing to kill you, but the tavern keeper will bash him over the head and he will escape into the alleyway.

i've never triggered the dialog myself, but it was posted some time ago here on the forums.

While usually true, I destroyed the Kingdom of Vaegirs after capturing their king who is still sitting in one of my prison towers.

They should still show up in the list of factions and probably still have lords even if they have no fiefs.  The faction exists as long as the king is somewhere in Calradia.

Not true. The faction exists as long as it has lands and lords. The king leaves after the faction is disbanded. In a previous game i kept Sanjar Khan in my dungeons as a trophy after defeating the khergits.
