Zolcos
Sergeant

I do what I can to avoid annoying anyone or being a griefer, but sometimes mistakes happen. I joined a normal-looking server earlier as Khergit and started lancing people. The server message was in English but everyone was chatting in another language. Eventually, they typed in English commanding me to stop and duel instead. I didn't think it was a DS but since it was a clan server I took his word for it -- I politely apologized and left (while someone started a kick poll!). I would like to have avoided this.
Let's look at the logical hints of a duel server:
- Deathmatch (2nd most popular mode overall)
- See lots of people without horses (happens in non-DS too)
- Manual block (to show off 1337 melee skills. I often avoid these anyway)
- No khergits (ensures more usable options for infantry-only fighting)
- "Duel" in the server name (this is a widely used convention)
Now let's compare it to that match:
- Autoblock (very rare for DS)
- Khergits (waste of a faction slot for DS)
- "duel" seen nowhere
If your duel server practically goes out of its way to not look like a duel server, then don't expect people to magically know what to do. Of course, I won't mention which one it was because I don't want to stir **** and this is just a general protip anyway.
In fact, the only reason I even know what a duel server is is becuase I read the forums. I have a hunch that a good portion of the "backstabbers" and griefers that you duelists complain about are actually just noobs that honestly don't know that "duel" is a technical term in Warband. If someone, say, buys the game on Steam they may not even realize that these forums exist.
Maybe this is all good reason to ask for more fine grained server controls like an infantry-only option, but until we get something like that, consider this: if you want people to follow special rules on your server, that's cool, but make it obvious. This way we can all know what to expect and avoid needlessly pissing off each other. And just have good times
