Yes, someone finally did it.
Yes, it's better than Native.
I made a mod that fixes a lot of the brokenness inherent in Native multiplayer. I could not do it without it becoming independent from Native, unfortunately. I did it because I got so tired of the obvious balance flaws that they were beginning to severely effect my ability to enjoy the game. Especially with the recent patches that just either made things worse or didn't fix anything at all. After having done it I can no longer believe some people think that Native multiplayer has any potential for true competition. It's a mess and some things just don't make any sense.
The mod itself still needs testing on a larger scale. I did not have dozens of people on hand during development to work out how it performs during matches, mainly regarding item pricing, though I did try. However, the other changes should be more than enough to grant credit.
I don't expect this to start a giant shift in the competitive scene, even though I hope it does. I did this just so I can say I did it, and to hopefully get some people to start thinking.
There is a server up hosted by RedEye Servers for those that wish to try the mod.
