Problems with .DDS

I was curious if anyone could help me with this: A few months ago I upgraded my computer and switched to an ATI Radeon HD 5700. Before this, I had an NVIDIA (I can't remember the exact card for the life of me) and I could edit, open and convert .DDS files. Now with my ATI, I can't seem to do any of the 3.

So if anyone has some advice, or free software that'll work; I'd appreciate it.

I use Paint.net for my dds needs. Its perfect for making transparencies  and it can save in any of the DDS formats you need.

I use gimp and the DDS plugin. Personally, gimp seems to be the best route for me. Paint.NET is cool, you may want to try that first.

I've been using Gimp for a long time now, and I've never gotten the DDS plugin to work.

I'll give Paint.NET a try.

Edit: Wow, Paint.NET works great! But uh, last question here:

The first step of why I need the ability to edit textures is to change the crosshair. Can I just draw in a new one from ui_gadgets?

Short answer: Yes
Long answer" You need transparencies, then you need to actually edit the crosshair, then you need to make sure it runs without white splotches everywhere. (Trust me... I learned from experience....)

I'm sure ill figure this out, thanks

EDIT: Alright, when you said transparencies did you mean like an Alpha Channel? I barely did textures, I just liked having the ability to modify them for when I was ready to learn.

I'm ready to learn, there's just not much on making crosshairs.

Yeah, you want to add an alpha channel.
I do that in GIMP by making what I want to be the crosshairs, then making a new layer that is transparent, then I erase all the white. Never tried in Paint.net, but it should be simple enough.

In Paint.net, you erase it. That's it. Making varying layers of opacity is a bit tougher, but it can be done with multiple layers set at different levels of opacity.

Thanks for the help guys, maybe someone will make a more in depth guide one day

Until then, I'll keep practicing.
