Problem with Marnid using a shield

For whatever reason I can't get Marnid to use a shield. For a while he had his crossbow. some bolts, an arming sword, and his shield. I didn't notice him much in battle during this period, so he may or may not have used a shield. However, when I gave him a horse and noticed him running around with his arming sword and no shield, I was a little confused, but decided it must have broken. Now I have seen him start the battle and only have his sword out, and have never seen him with a shield. Since then I gave him a great lance and took away his crossbow and bolts, so his weapons were the lance/sword/shield. Still he never uses the shield. I did some searches and didn't see that anyone else had this problem, so I'm wondering if I might be doing something wrong. I talked to my brother who also bought the game and his Marnid uses the his shield perfectly.

There's a bug where units on horses won't use shields, so if he still has that horse that's probably the problem.

Edit: I just found out that the new version 6.23 fixes this bug, so get the new version first.
