"After gathering a large flock, willing to ravage the land with burning fire and flame and striking with swords..."
(Life of St. Léger)

The_zpsybje7rxc.png
Viking fleets returned to Normandy. They had often found safe harbour there in the past, a constant source of dispute with king Æþelréd of England until the Pope mediated a truce between king and count ten years ago; but the count had died and his son, Richard II, had welcomed the Vikings again as their onslaught on England heightened. They conquered at Maldon and fell on London, and many of them took tribute and settled down as men of the king; but still others ravaged the shores of England for three full years before sailing to Normandy with their spoils.

Æþelréd was quick to exploit the respite, however, as he laid waste to Cumberland and the Isle of Man, known Viking bases in the Irish Sea; but his attention soon turned to Normandy. At Portsmouth he gathered another ship-fyrd, ready to cross the sea and do the most harm to Richard, that he may stop supporting the pirates. Ælfríc son of Ælfhere, ealdorman of Hampshire, was chosen as the captain, even though some whispered that he was a friend to the Danes; and he was to be assisted by a Danish steersman, Pallig son of Tókig, one of those who had accepted Æþelréd’s terms and entered his service.

But even before they came to land near Barfleur, the Norman lookouts spied the fleet in the horizon, and swiftly they rode to warn the young Niel, viscount of the Cotentin, Richard’s friend and most trusted captain. Together with his companion Alvreid Gaianz, “the Giant”, he mustered his host at Coutances and marched on the Saire valley to defend his land and folk against the invaders, gathering many stragglers along the way in his hurried advance towards the columns of smoke in the distance that marked where the English had burned down a village along the coast.

It was a pleasant summer day in the Saire valley, and the histories of England and Normandy were about to become inextricably intertwined.

Date: Sunday, May 17th at 19:00 BST/UTC+1

Where: Vikingr_Event_Server

TeamSpeak Address: 195.249.188.149

Víkingr Mod Version: Víkingr 1.0

MODE
The event will consist of several rounds of Battle on the Tochevile map, including resets at the discretion of the organizers. Once the victor of the Battle map has been decided, the Conquest map, Barbefloz, will be the next phase of the event.

SIGN-UP
Non-affiliated players who sign up must state which name they'll be using during the event and which side they wish to fight for, and they will be assigned to one of the public hosts: the Cyrlisce Scipmenn for the English and the Gent de la Sare for the Normans. Regular Víkingr clans may sign up as a group and say how many players they expect to bring - this is a serious commitment. If a clan has less than 5 players, they may be merged with another clan or with a public host. Non-Víkingr clans will only be accepted at the organizers' discretion. The organizers of the event will retain the privilege to allocate clans and non-affiliated players to either host for balancing purposes. The special class slots will be assigned by the leaders of each side.

PUBLIC HOST PLAYERS
All public host players are requested to use the default faction banner and to use the basic class for each faction:
  • Costentineis (Normant): Pedaile
  • Engla Scipfyrd (Engle): Gárberend

And I thought that this event wouldnt come and didnt contact Deorlaf.......****.

Great though, really looking forward to it.

Rallix is leading the Norman public host? I'm in! He was awesome in the last historical event.

Sign me up for the Norman pubbers as: Drogue filz Hamelin

Although I would eventually like to play with a clan one day...

Come one, come all. Join the Normant team or join the Engle team. In zee end it materz littl' fo' we s'all, 'ow do you say, make ze englismen kick ze bucke'.
Translation: "In the end we shall, how do you say, make then englishmen kick the bucket."

Ps: This is meant purely as a joke, just in case that wasn't obvious. Except everyone is actually welcome to the event, that bit was serious.

Oh, waw! This is awesome news.

My thanks to Déorláf to organize this event, to Hróðbeorht for offering us this little-known piece of history (srsly, the English invasion of Normandy?) and Ealdgyð for making the maps (I'm so curious already). And to Si-A-erra and especially Skvor for taking the torch as artists! These pieces are splendid, guys!

Ælfríc Ealdorman of the English has already reached out to me when assembling his companions. Let us prepare to meet in an honest and fair match!

(Sry about the village, guys.)

Sign me up for the English host. I want to kick some french ass (even if they're not really french, but normans/franks).

Edit: Oh my, I did not state my in-game name. I apologize. I would be Æstán if I knew how to get Warband to recognize the Æ and á. So, I will be Aestan.

I suppose cavalry will only be avaible to the Counts retainers and those will only be clan members ?

Well, you can ask a clan to take you as a guest. Who knows whether they'll be getting horsies, though.

The Arnarins will make up the retinue of the count ?

I'm definetely interested in playing for the Engle side as a pugger. Since the name I normally use for Vikingr (Sighvatr) isn't English, I'd probably go with Sigefrith.

The count (Richard) and his retainers are probably having a nice lunch in Rouen; Niel is the viscount.
