wish to invite you to our series of battle events for The Deluge. In this series of engagements we intend to replicate the combat of this era of history. Each event will have a different theme or composition of troops, although primarily we will be working with the Swedish, Polish & Muscovite factions.

The "Prepare to Give Fire!" event is offered to you in a format that is accessible, understandable and above all, enjoyable. Conducted much in the same manner as our previous "Muster & Drill" events, players can expect something that is 'professionally' run with an emphasis on historical accuracy for the period and a leniency towards folk simply enjoying the evening. We hope to give players an experience to be remembered, whether it be with friends new, friends old or friends yet to be made.

The event itself will be run over the course of sixty minutes during the evening, perhaps slightly longer if needs be. There is no sign up or registration sheet involved, no obligation to provide numbers on a promise, simply turn out before the appointed hour and join the musket sleeve. For the first event we will be testing the water with folk split into two or three units on each side, providing musket volleys and support for one another as the fight waxes and wanes. With our expansive history and experience with the Deluge to mind, we're looking to forcibly slow down the pace of combat to something that is much easier to manage and thereby provide a superior historical experience. Musket blocks are expected to function as a group for as long as feasibly possible until attrition takes effect and melee is discouraged until necessity drives the block forward into bloody close-combat. We're not looking for the quick-kicks of previously hosted events, no sudden cavalry charges or rush of pikes into a disorganised mob - the "Prepare to Give Fire!" is here to create a slow and bloody affair. We have also taken consideration towards group whom sign up; to avoid any potential imbalance in both number and // or superiority in skill, all groups will be shuffled into their respective blocks without prejudice, it's time to rub shoulders with the public!

Those of you here whom have participated in our previous "Muster & Drill" events are in for some familiar circumstances, those whom are unaware are in for a treat! The venerable Serjeant Richard Flockton will be opening the battle event with a short introduction to basic drills of the Seventeenth Century. This will last no longer than fifteen minutes and will keep you engaged for the duration of the muster. Once he has outlined the absolute basics, we will begin the battle event in earnest.

Further details on correct "Muster & Drill" procedures may be found in this thread. Take a gander within if you are new, the information is light and well presented!

This event will function on the most basic of concepts. They are as follows;
  • All participants are to be organised into two or three sleeves (blocks) without prejudice.
  • All participants are to walk unless otherwise instructed by their Serjeant (block leader).
  • Firing of muskets should be done so only on the command of the Serjeant, or in case of his death, another player in the sleeve.
  • Melee is to be discouraged unless ammunition cannot be scavenged for the sleeve. Only when all ammunition has been expended may a sleeve engage in melee with another.

On top of the event rules above, we have three basic rules that are always in effect. They are;
  • DO NOT team hit, kick or kill under ANY circumstance. We will give ONE warning and should you persist you will be banned from our server - we take this seriously.
  • Do not disrupt the event. Help us to make it a smooth, enjoyable experience for all involved.
  • Do enjoy yourself! We run these sorts of things for everyone's enjoyment - whilst it is intended to be educational it is also intended to be enjoyable.

The important question; how do you get involved? It's very simple;
[list type=decimal]
[*]Have access to TeamSpeak 3 (microphone optional but encouraged)
[*]Have the latest version of The Deluge

I would just like to reiterate a few important points in the opening post;
  • "Simply turn out before the appointed hour": This is very important due to the nature of how the event will be conducted. We want to start this event dead on time, so try and make sure you're on the TeamSpeak channel and ready to be in the game before 7pm BST / 8pm CEST. Effectively treat the start time as 6:45pm BST / 7:45pm CEST.
  • "We're looking to forcibly slow down the pace of combat": Walking is mandatory. No ifs, no buts, it is how you will move around unless given a direct order to run by your Serjeant.
  • "All groups will be shuffled into their respective blocks without prejudice": Clans, gaming groups - none of these matter for this event. You will be placed in a block, which will have been given a commander, and you will fight alongside those whom you find yourself standing shoulder-to-shoulder with.
  • "...Opening the battle event with a short introduction to basic drills": This is very important. In order for you to know what is expected of you you must attend this drill part. It will be short, it will be brief, it will be as quick and painless as I can manage it to be whilst imparting what you need to know. We won't be performing complicated drills in the interests of keeping things simple and easy to understand.

Remember; With this event we are trying to do something new for the community, something that has not really been tried or performed before. If this event goes well and people enjoy it then we'll look at expanding further upon with different types of troops and factions. For the moment we're testing the water, so do bear with us.

We hope you will come along for it as it should prove to be something new and different compared to other events - instead of groups in loose formations sniping or charging at each other this will involve lines of muskets at spitting distance discharging into the blocks. We will be adjusting the values for firearms (reload rate, accuracy) through the server controls to find what we believe will be a happy medium for this sort of event to be historically accurate. It will be nasty, it will be brutal, it will be bloody but it should also be damned good fun.

We hope to see you there!

And remember - stay safe & keep your powder dry!
