Recruit
-if you've played games like Legion and chairots of war you know what i mean-

before battle starts there could be a strategy map where you select your units starting positions, formations and tactics.

Yes, I agree.

I would also like to see better use of the tactics skill. So far I think it's pretty useless, except I believe you get more men with you at the start of a battle. t seems a little pointless.

Get Battle Size Changer in the Mod forum, and join a battle between Vaegir and Swadian war partys (50 men each!) and you cant say it shouldnt be great with such a thing zerck is suggesting here.

Just what I was thinking. A high skill in tactics (higher than opponent) should not just affect the number of men you can bring along (which is a good idea) but also
1. Allow you to choosing terrain (say pick one of 3 randomly generated maps based on information about the relation between water, hills, trees and plains or something) and
2. Which men to bring along.

Say, for example, that you are a knight, very depending on your horse and a terrain that enables you to use your lance. All the randomly generated maps seem like a catastrophe to you. You decide to leave your knight friends behind and bring your infantry and crossbow men instead.

I think this would be a good idea. It would probably be better if you had options depending on whether you were attacking or defending. For example, when defending you either have a choice of placing all of your men, or even placing none due to ambush (and vice versa for attackers). I would be able to write this better and make it sound more appealing if I wasn't drinking alcohol.

it owuld be cool if you could like place some men as if you were ambushing...put crossbowmen where the enmy cant "see" them, theyll rush by them and get shot and they your kinght, or infantry come in to finish them off...cause right now i have no use for archers....they just to slow, i finish off the enemy by the time they anyhwere near my archers

It would be nice to be able to order heroes to dismount in a pre-battle screen. Since they are incompetent mavericks on horseback, I dont let them ride horses when trying to keep my forces organized (hold position/follow).

Also having half a minute or so before an attacking army arrives on field to find a good position would be very helpful when using an infantry-based army.

A very good idea. But I think until (if?) we are able to break up our little army into smaller units which we can bark separate orders to, I don't know how useful arraying troops would be. I mean, whatever the initial position, they're not going to hold that array once the battle begins.

Edit: On a further point, I think the AI would be mightily overpowered by human players, unless armagan works hard to build in a chess-like tactical intelligence into it. For multiplayer, however, it would be very enhancing.

also i think in short the run it could be made that you can select which units are deployed in battle.
i hate it when i have lots of knights but only one of them entering battle.

that, if i have understood correctly, is based on your tactics skill, the better tactics, the mor ehigh lvl troops join you in battle

It doesn´t even have to be as advanced as giving me the opportunity to choose map.

Just give me a chance to reorder my troops in the party list before entering battle but AFTER seeing the map.

Like, freeze the game just after the map has been generated and loaded and is displayed to me from a first-person perspective. Enable me to reorder my troops and then press a button to go for it, provided I was the one with the initiative (= having a higher tactics skill).

That is, I would have to make a choice based on what I see of the map from my starting position. What I see might not be representative for the entire map and I could make the wrong conclusion but I would still be given the opportunity to make some kind of decision.
