There are far too many games out there that deal in sword and sorcery style fantasy if that's what you want. M&B does well with the medieval aspect. There's no need to add any fantasy to it. The only thing I would consider adding, is a ghost story style 'adventure', but leave the player guessing, even at the end of the adventure, whether or not it was real or what.
I'd personally like to see the end of the big story (when it's finally implemented) to put the player up against things that may be more or less than human as a final challenge/plot twist, but for the main game? No.
No magic weapons, no orcs, no skeletons walking the fields. That'd be far, far too cliche.
Gunpowder would be a plus for me, they have records that it was in use in Europe in the 1300's, and in use in China before the 900's (as a weapon).
I wouldnt mind a bit of fantasy-ish armour (not magical or anything, just 'cool looking) and swords and such. Eye candy stuff.
Differnt species might be nice as well.
Drawing the line at magic though, and dragons and suchlike.
Magic always messes up the the hold of "power" someone has, so no.
For example like "Wow, the enemy has 50 footmen but I alone can just burn them all with this one spell...huh." And since there is no way to heal in battle, healing magic is out. No magic please.
I agree it brings a whole mess of problems regarding balance. Besides, without involving magic, medieval war-torn society has so much richness standing alone, there's no need.
I think you guys are seeing this in terms of extremes, and how the slightest hint of supernatural elements would immediately turn this into a Forgotten Realms clone.
Personally, I think that - if anything - it'd be more like Hyborea, the Conan the Barbarian world, where 99.9% of things happening are between mortal men with plain steel swords, and that what little supernatural things happen are usually far beyond the reckoning of even your average hero.
Frankly, I'd like to see some sci-fi elements, as opposed to fantasy. I mean, these are nations that no one's heard of. How'd they get there? Easy guess=planet was colonized a long time ago, but for some reason the planet entered a dark age, and now the dark age is finally ending, long after the people forgot their origins.
