I think that's a generalization, first person sacrifices combat awareness for precision. I switch back and forth depending on the situation, striking from horseback is harder in third person especially with lances or spears, I personally find uses for both in archery, couched lancing seems almost impossible in third person. I think it's mostly a matter of taste coupled with what your favorite weapon is.
I generally use third person sorely because of the increase in the awareness of one's surroundings. It really helps to know when I guys is about to stab you in the back
