And why do you use it?

Just curious. Lately I find it best to switch around. Some of the bologna with spear tips passing through people seems less severe in first person.

I usually use first person when I thrust with spears/use ranged weapons (it helps my precision in aiming), but when I'm running around in melee or just traveling I use third person since it gives me better awareness of my surroundings.

I voted first person, though I will occasionally switch. The only time I really play in third person, is when I'm using throwing weapons and a shield; I find that it's hard to see much in first person then. Otherwise, I only use third person for vanity reasons while not in combat.

First person and third for vanity also.I want to see how Kool I look(though not as far as flowing mane of hair).

I imagine 1st person view as having restricted view due to helmet.I wish 3rd person had larger FOV though.Would add to this for me.

Would be kool that when you go into first person view it has an animation of helmet being put on.

I always use third person. In first person I just feel too vulnerable, like I'm handicapped.

I mostly fight on foot with a two handed weapon, and I find 3d person handiest.

  • When you walk, your camera doesn't 'bounce' with your head. While many of you will say: it's realistic, irl your head would bounce too, I say that is not true. I don't know what it's called in English, but the organ in your ear that takes care of your balance makes sure you don't notice your own head bouncing, or at least that you aren't bothered by it. In game, I find it quite irritating.
  • You have a better idea of what is happening around you. Your vision is wider. In first person, your vision is waaay too narrow. An enemy can step out of your view with one or two steps, making blocking harder.

The only disadvantage I can come up with for 3d person is that if you just blocked an overhead attack, but it was a feign and your enemy attacks again, you can't immediately see what he's going to do because your own body fills most of the camera.

I switch when it's necessary, but I voted 3d person, since the few times I switch it (when I use a ranged weapon) are neglectable.

I only use 3rd to admire my pretty armor for a moment.  1st person all the way otherwise....more efficient and realistic.  Besides, there are so many 3rd person medieval games over the years, why sabotage one that isn't?

I usually do first person when I'm trying to couch people and when I play as an archer shooting through a window.  Otherwise I like 3rd person, I don't like getting side swiped by a horseman.

3rd person is much better than 1st person since you can see your surroundings, check behind corners, know if someone is sneaking up on you, and in melee fights it is easier to get around someone or defend if someone is running around your side.

I use 3rd person all the time. Same reasons as others as far as awareness and defence goes. I play mainly melee and it seems to help my timing when I can see my character, I prefer sword to lance from horse back but still do fine at my couch attempts from 3rd person.

Third person gives me a larger vision radius, thus improving my combat awareness. It's also how I've been playing M&B for the past 3 years, so I am very used to it.

I have kind of large monitor, 24". and when I am using 1st person, I really feel dizzy. Plus it really hard to defend when someone else is running around you.

i use first and third person to add dramatic effect, and to make me look better, third person makes it abit easier though

I am actually surprised how many people use 3rd person instead of 1st.  I am primarily an infantry/melee fighter and I use 1st person almost exclusively.  Blocking isn't hard in 1st person, IMO.

In fact, blocking is easier in 1st (I used it a long time too), as long as your foe stands still. Once he starts moving, third is handier. After a short while of practice I'm able to block as well in 3d as in 1st, so there's not much reason to play in 1st.

I must say that looks pretty cool, and in that game it also isn't irritating because you are not toe-to-toe with your enemy (when you are firing you are standing still). But in M&B, I find it annoying. You're standing less than a metre away from your enemy, and if you're sidestepping then, you're whole damn screen is bouncing, which isn't really crippling my combat abilities, but seriously decreasing my awareness of other enemies in the vincinity apart from the guy I'm focused on.

Apart from all that, the walking animation in M&B isn't fantastic (not that it bothers me that much), and the head bumping is just a bit too much...

Third person here.  I just sorta defaulted into it when I first started playing M&B, and have used it ever since.  I accidentally switched to 1st person a few days ago in multiplayer, and was utterly disoriented and soon killed.  I quickly found the toggle button (it's "R", btw, for any other blissfully ignorant folks like me) and switched back.  I might try to accustom myself to 1st person sometime in single player just for kicks, but in multiplayer its 3rd person for me.

I can't play in 1st... I guess I'm susceptible to motion sickness because in every 1st person game I eventually get sick. Mount & Blade is the worst because of the up close combat and quick turning.
