What about this type of customization?

JuanNieve's second image shows a feasible gilding.

There were some cool black plate armors, I think it would look really cool.

  Not exactly what I had in mind by armor customization, but a valid historical representation none the less.

If you lose the sword, with this 'customization' it won't matter, you have something to fight with...

The arising question is : does it inflinct blunt or piercing damage ?  :fruity:

I wouldn't say no to being able to customize armour, such as colour and additional attachments but It'd be a lot of work to add a full armour crafting feature as most player models would be different sizes unlike warband. I just can't see it being worthwhile

That's exactly what I meant by having armor custom-made to fit the individual wearer, rather than customized from a "stock" design, or in those rather vivid cases, to fit the individual wearer's expectations and ego instead of reality.  Each suit for most of the important nobility was individually designed and crafted, but properly representing that variety in a video game would demand a massive amount of work to create all of the different models and textures.  As said, a far cheaper solution is to use each of the same handful of models for multiple suits, but apply different textures to achieve more visual variety.  One can then hope that the modding community will expand on both the models and textures.

this whole discussion ended up revolving around cosmetics, which have the obvious graphical barriers. The other really cool aspect of smithing is that chosen parameters change the stats. It would be cool if you cool take a pre-designed type of armor (just like the blade types) and alter things like thickness, under armor which would affect weight and other variables. Then you could make a helmet that has a certain look but much better statistics, based on your skill level.

A full modular armor system doesn't really suit the setting.
A good layering system does (see Kingdom Come: Deliverance for an example), but that's not happening either. It'd be overkill anyway.

What might be doable is extending the static deformation system used by gauntlets to the other accessory layers.
For example, right now armors seem to have 1 normal gloveless model and 1 gloved variant (with the sleeves narrowed to let the gloves fit on top).
I don't think TW wants to take it any further than that.

But for modders, it wouldn't be out of the question to do, let's say, 3 variants: gloved, breasted, and skirted.
One with squeezed arms, one with squeezed torso, one with squeezed legs.
This would be a total of 8 models for each base body layer (000,001,010,011,100,101,110,111).
That would allow all reasonable customization options without too much work on the art side.

I voted no since the way TW set armor values make no sense and I have to increase every single armor value to make the game playable. If armor were made up of pieces in crafting_pieces it would be a lot more tedious to edit.

I have no idea why crafting needs to be in this game. I don't think any single person played warband and thought, "hey I hope the sequel has crafting." Maybe some people want it there, I don't know. I just hope not too much time or effort is being put into this mechanic. Not every game needs crafting and games often implement it as an excuse to sell rare materials in some kind of real-money marketplace post launch. it's also a way to make games more grindy in the absence of actual content.

I agree, I think the vast majority of people would choose custom troops over this any day of the week.

Make i t look and move exactly like existing stuff but have better (or same) stats, we just need to be able to GET armor and the Devs seems absurdly reluctant to just make it drops off lords or show in shops more. There was even mods for both making lords drop their gear and mods for making armor actually reduce damage in ways that are useful, so I wish they would just stick it in the game already.

I'd like to see if not custom armor crafting (along with ranged weapons), then at least the ability to smith basic armor types. No idea why "weapons only" implementation should be the end of it, if the basic code is already in.

A lot of people enjoy it. In Bannerlord terms, it opens up another path to character progression/playstyle. It's perfectly fine if you don't intend to make use of it in any shape or form, but I'm personally all for alternative possibilities.

Would I rather see other elements of the game improved? Sure. But if that won't happen (and I seriously get the vibe TW is already in "no new features" mode, much to my disappointment), than expansion of existing elements is the least I'd expect.

As it was stated before many times, armor crafting similar to weapon crafting is pretty much impossible, but I think it would be very nice to be able to order a specific already existing armor from a smithy or craft it yourself with proper materials and skills. In terms of customization, I think being able to choose clothing colors would be cool indeed.

This is my stance as well. Statistical changes should be relatively simple. Choose the armor type/look, then use different materials or craft skill levels to change weight, armor. No cosmetic changes would be needed and people could still take advantage of their Smithing skill to make better armor.
