Detroit -

So some people got together at a park and were going to slug it out in a pillow fight. The police broke it up, even confiscating some pillows. One of the persons involved commented that police said he needed a permit.

And uh.. heres a look at the website of Detroit's professional pillow fighting team; Dreamweavers

So think the police were out of line?

Oh, turns out this was a worldwide event.

Police say cleanup was the issue? ****. They're feathers. From ducks. Like those what live in the park.

Alternatively, polyester stuffing, which stays together very well. And pillowcases help.

****ing police are becoming retarded of late.

Yeah for some reason I just can't picture Detroit with a major city beautification tradition.

More likely it was about the element of people involved. Some normal people see a bunch of semi-goth kids grouped together shouting and cheering in the daytime, and its bound to get some peoples panties in a ruffle.

Generally, such things can be avoided by calling the local bobby and informing them of the intention. Particularly when the event involves people hitting other people with things, that kind of thing can easily be misconstrued and cause consternation within the general public.

Yeah, but that almost sounds like the path to a police state. Shouldn't the police be able to excercise common sense once they arrive at the scene?

I'm curious why someone would need a permit to operate a pillow

Atually come to think of it, it is.

Theres this little thing in the first admendment called freedom of assembly. And being that the park is a public place, it was violation of civil rights for police to break it up as it was their individual right to come together with other individuals and collectively express, promote, pursue and defend common interests.

Sorry to disappoint.

The police probably got a tip-off that they were terrorist pillows or something, full of explosives and whatnot.

I would be more worried about the type of police oppression whereby people end up dead: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7991206.stm

Plus, it could be worse. You could live in Thailand: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7996241.stm

Ever heard of "Wasting police time"?

Really?  Arch i'm now certain you intentionally like to push my buttons

You mean to tell me that these people fund their cities police station, cannot excercise their constitutional right to pillow fight in a ****ing public park?

Killing me Arch

Surely the person making the 911 call would be the one guilty of wasting police time, anyway? I mean, they're the ****wits that mistook a pillow fight for some kind of gang war or whatever.

Not too hard to fill a pillowcase with bricks. Then instead of a pillow fight you've got a mass murder.

Oh lawd.

Maybe it's different in the US.

I'm not supporting what the cops did. I agree it sounds bad, but we needn't rush to the most extreme scenarios possible. Hardly helps disscussion. Or maybe we're looking for a rabble instead.

Yeah, but a brick filled pillowcase is easy to spot on account of all the smashed faces should it have been used.

Or maybe we're looking for a rabble instead.

Grab ye'r torches and pitchforks!

Simple. Hide, empty pillowcase, fill with pillow again. And no one's the wiser.

I didn't say that it wouldn't be obvious that *someone* had bricks in their pillowcase, just that the individual responsible might be able to get away with it.

What, it was causing a mess. Pillows nowadays aren't made of all-natural, biodegrable junk.
