Plate Armor Deflection Chance

I was thinking it might be cool if plate armor had a %chance to automatically deflect certain ranged attacks. This could also apply to the top of the head section of most metal helms. I don't know what this chance should be. Maybe 25%? It would certainly make archers think twice about firing at plate clad enemies.

Also, crossbows and great bows should ignore this miss chance, right?

There is obviously no need for something like this with melee attacks, because armagan already has a crafty system where weak melee attacks do 0 damage to a heavily armored foe.

Well... it is realistic, because warrios in plate armors didn't need to use shields..
But I think the chance shouldn't be a fixed number.. it should be affected by the attacker's weapon skill and such.. and reinforced armors would have a better chance than the rusty ones..

Wow, this thread go absolutely no attention. Not even bad attention. I can only assume people looked at it and thought something like, "I guess, but what's the point?". I think I proposed this mainly because I was thinking about how truly effective full plate armor can be. I almost suggested a 50% deflection chance, but I guess that's overkill. Oh yeah, I was also hearing the *tink* *tink* sound in my head of arrows bouncing harmlessly off of plate armor. There is something satisfying about it.

What's funny is that I almost never wear plate, either. :???: For some reason I prefer the infantry-priest character.

Sounds like a great idea, not sure why more people haven't voiced support over it. And is seems like it would be pretty easy to impliment.

I think it's a pretty cool idea. I'm sick of people wearing 14th century plate armor, carrying 11th century shields. YOU DON'T NEED THE F***ING SHIELD, MAN!

A quote from another threat (blunt arrow)
Blunt arrows did actually exist.
[
Many armors had a kind of front wedge shape profile. So rather than having a flat torso, they had a sort of crest, from top to buttom torso, Reason was arrows. A arrow can penatrate with ease a flat torso but it was difficult with a crest shape torso.

Answer to that torso design: blunt arrows. They were designed to crush the plate rather than penetrate it with pretty much the same results...

That's why 2h swords weren't very common....

I like the idea from a realism standpoint, but I don't know how well it would translate into gameplay. Chance based gameplay elements have a loot of room to be annoying.

I agree, Pope.

Also, plate armor has it's weak spots - the joints. Armor wasn't just one solid
sheet of metal, even plate. The armor was held together by leather bands at
the sides and shoulders, and in some cases, the ches. (I've worn a fair share
of armor for reinactment battles) So, a well aimed shot to the front may not
work, but get ya from the side and yer toast.

Roman armour had it's defects, such as it's wieght and joints. That's why they carried 6ft tower shields with a strengthening boss in the middle. It could also be used to knock opponents down before slicing 'em up with their gladius.

I've read somewhere that each armour point in M&B gives you a certain % chance of reducing damage. Which seems fairly evident when you're wearing plate armour or black armour, as a great deal of attacks deal 0 damage. So armour already "deflects". Or absorbs in M&B, if you're picky.

Sure, it absorbs the damage, but you aren't able to do anything if you're surrounded by a bunch of Vaegir Peasants and all of your knights are off killing their knights. I think that any hit that does 0 damage should not interrupt attacks.

I find that quite plausible actually as a whole mob of 20 peasants surely should be able to keep one single knight who´s standing in the middle of them from fighting effectively if they are all attacking him fiercely in melee combat and trying to knock him down with brute force.

... but I´m all for heavy plate armor having a certain chance of simply deflecting ranged missiles as I recall quite a few times that I got pretty annoyed by river pirates interrupting my couched lance attack by throwing a stupid little pebble at me while I´m wearing a full suit of steel plate

i like the idea.
one should also be able to bypass a armor at some points (needs new hitboxes) like that helmet on your picture

This is a more developed and older conversation. Why don't we move the discussion to this thread, so that the same points don't have to be repeated?
