PoTC with the comprehensive Build 12 mod by the community is a great game and absolutely nothing like the game as you got it out of the box. If you have not played it for a few months (or years) I would highly recommend trying it out again with the mod which can be found in the Files section of the Pirates Ahoy website here
http://www.piratesahoy.net/ The community modders are busy with another huge Build 13 mod which will appear soon. Age of Pirates and Pirates of the Burning Sea (MMoRPG) are new games that will be appearing this year.
Yes sirree, Build 12 made
Pirates of the Caribbean an amazing game in additon to eliminating (for me and most it seems) the dreaded Crash To Desktop but more than that it added quests, fixed quests, just added tons of improvement. I've enjoyed it a great deal since. See http://www.piratesahoy.net/
Sid Meier's Pirates! is my near favorite pirate game because it has that open-ended nonserious gameplay that I favor: I play to gain what I feel like winning and not to finish someone elses campaign. When people say it can be repetitious well to each his own
but you know that could be said of EVERY game: whether it be HL2 or Age of Empires or Starcraft or even our beloved M&B. (Seriously, I've killed thousands of pirates, bandits,Dark Knights, etc. If it's walks or rides, I've killed it.)
I'm a pirate type fan. I just finished
Tropico 2 Pirates Cove which is a sort of Settlers-style city builder with pirates - no player-controllable pirate combat though - a completely nonserious lightweight game. I enjoyed it, finished three looong sandbox games but now I'm moving on. .
Mount & Blade has such an entertaining style right now, that it makes wish that elements that I've loved in these pirate-themed games was incorporated into it: some goal, some reason to keep fighting.
In
Port Royale 2 you could gain lands and title based on your success in governing the colony; it made what is at times a too business-oriented game (instead of a pirates and pirate combat) worthwhile for me; I could play it differently striving for different goals.
I love pirate games.
However,
Mountain & Blade kicks their combined behinds!
