What "themes" have you already got?

Well, i've got the following sorts of themes -

Perianor - A typical fantasy faction - most similar to Gondor from LOTR, with a little bit of the Roman Empire thrown in for extra flavour (heavily armoured, well-trained, etc).
Grandwood - Romano-British/Saxon/Nordic type peoples (all infantry, mainly axes (both their main tool and weapon) so pretty much similar to Vikings/Saxons.
Esterhaven - These are fairly generic for the moment, except for their heavy cavalry - possibly 12th/13th century Europeans in spirit?
Valdholm - Rough, tough mountain men - that's the only thing I can think of to describe them for now.

Based on the name alone I'd suggest something.. Welsh.. but you already seem to have a "sturdy mountain folk" in the form of Valdholm. Where were you going to put them on your map? Lindale?

Yes, Lindale is their intended location - Corwyn was going to be to the east. Historically, they're a maritime people - coming from a group of Hellenistic themed cities - so maybe lightly armoured troops and skirmishers?

Marines and Arbalestiers and Corsairs, oh my! Sounds good to me.

This looks fantastic, mate. Just ask if you need any help.

Will do. I just need to pull my finger out and stop playing with textures and stuff until all the crunch work is done, then maybe I can focus on making things look nicer (and then perhaps creating models of my own).

After so much time, one sane person starting a normal mod. I applaud you.

Dunno about sane, but i'm not one for expecting others to do MY work for me.

Some of the ideas we see issue forth out of people's minds here are actually interesting. The only problem is that they don't apply logic or common sense, instead thinking that modding is an instaneous process, with little or no effort involved.

Map editor has stayed stable long enough for me to make some progress with a map - I still need to add forests and rivers, but the elevation is pretty much done for now.

Also, regarding faction sizes - each faction will be about half the size of a native faction - they'll have about 10 or so villages, a few castles and two towns. Each faction will also only have 10 lords to reflect this.

The reason for the smaller factions is to reflect that they were all once part of the same kingdom, and none of them can even hope to reach the size and level of power that Althea previously possessed.

Looking quite good as of now, introducing myself to mapping for now, maybe someday i will be able to map for you

Best advice I can give you is to save often - that was my third attempt at a map, and fortunately, i've had no crashes this time.

It's improving, albeit slowly. I still need to get rid of the excess towns, cities and castles, but i'm getting there.

It's looking good.. but isn't that a little too obviously the Black Sea? :???:

Haha, I didn't think it was that noticeable. Yeah, it's the Black Sea, joined at the left end by the Caspian Sea, and the smaller ocean to the right is the Adriatic. Not terribly imaginative, I know, but I'm rather fond of it.

The map looks very good. You've got skills.

You're really too kind. It's only half-done in that shot - I'm in the process of adding rivers, and fleshing out other areas of the map so it's not flat when you look around it - the deserts could do with some dunes, and the north is getting more mountains, and there'll be a bit more vegetation around the map so it looks more realistic. Then I can start on editing some scenes (Ideally i'd like most of the city of Grandwood to be made of wood - walls included).

Still a lot more to be done...

I made the map for Sod V5 and Prophecy of the Black Heart.

Map making is a slow and an imaginary devourer. But I like the idea of making a fantasy map based on realworld locations.
And if this is one of the first maps you've done, you have skills.

I worked my ass off for weeks with the sod 5 map, and I'm still not pleased with it.

Well, Asul (as the world itself is called) was mapped out over a year ago, originally as a DnD campaign that fell through. I've been developing the map and the lore since then, and thought it would make for a pretty interesting mod.

So really, it's just a case of carefully following what i've already done, albeit in 3d.

It certainly shows. It's very impressive.

The OP has been updated with the new map, and some new troop screens.

Thanks.

I like the update of the map.
The forests are a textbook example. Spread out, not to tight and no to many.
Nice!

Thank you. I think i'm pretty much done with the map now, save for maybe a few tweaks later on.

Just read trough the first page. Looks good, keep the good work up:wink:

Glad you like.

The OP has been updated with some more information, as well as some screenshots (only a few for now, more will be coming shortly) & banners. Almost everything for the first four factions has been sorted - I still need to add the fifth, and implement the new map, and create/edit new scenes.

Astor.

So, seeing as i'm just about ready to get around to doing them, what sort of companions do people like to see?

UggaBugga 说:
Knights mostly, from what I've seen in a poll.

it depends on who you're asking

Well, it's just a general question to everyone really - that way I can strike a balance between my own ideas and what people would ideally like to see - i've already got a few ideas (such as a few rangery types, some knights, adventurers and barbarians), but i'd like to hear the views of others on the subject.

The first post has been updated with some screenshots of Perianorean troops in battle (bottom of the screenshots section).

Astor.
