You can't "Remove them" because they are a vital part of the game, providing cover and also they sometimes get in the way of cavalry. 
But you can make they look very horrible, which will make the game run better. Its in visual options just put graphic settings on low.
On another note if your running it in directx9 It is a lot more demanding If you have a slower computer I suggest switching to directx7.
