I dont understand how so many americans still consider this man a heroes i had never heard of him untill i read Bernard Cornwells book The Fort which had him in it which was based on The Penobscot Expedition another thing that americans seem to know nothing about even though it was quite a large battle in the war of independance. at this battle this man who was said to be a heroe disobeyed commands and ran away abandoning his men and leaving an entire ships worth of men to be captured as he took his own ship home abandoning them. when i looked into it more i dound that he never even finished his midnight ride as its known as he was captured and taken to england he wa one of 12 riders im just wondering how a man court marshelled for cowardice, who didnt even play a large role in any of the revolution and who has always been critised can be rememberd as a hero?  like to know your thoughts on it

He's famous, not thought of by a hero. The poem about him is used by elementary school teachers to teach the basics of poetry, and a tiny bit about american history.

I don't know anyone who thinks about him as a great American hero

He's less of a national hero and more of just one of those names we know for what ever reason. He's just oone of those names we know despite not really being that important... hard to explain. I guess people use him as an example of a hero even though nobody really thinks of him as one.
