Padded cloth woes

The better solution is to give him stats that represent where a character should be at level 6.  Except for his weapon proficiencies, which are up over the 60 mark, his stats are LOWER than any level 1 character BEFORE they get to the stat distribution scheme.  That's the major reason Marnid and Borcha suck so much.

Extra NPC mod starts Marnid & Borcha at Level 1

I'm assuming limitting the quest to "Padded Cloth" is to avoid possible bugs or conflicts in the program when actually giving Marnid something and triggering the code that makes him join the party.

But I agree that it is sometimes rather annoying and quite unrealistic to have to travel around the world, finding chain mail, plate, or even black armor, and still searching each and every armor merchant unsuccessfully for that stupid suit of "Tattered Padded Cloth" .

Why not simply have the Constible who gives you the River Pirate Quest hand over a suit of Thick Padded Cloth instead of a shield?  Then you can choose whether to wear better armor at the start of the game or gain a party member.

If not that, how about a simple quest?  Add a tailor or something to Zendar who offers the player an introductory quest.  You could use it to provide a little trivia about the time period as well:  "I swear these pirates and brigainds are becoming a major nuisance!  They raided a merchant caravan right outside the gate of the town, if you can believe that!  Amongst the goods they stole was a box of needles that I had ordered more than three months ago!  Do you have any idea how much that cost me!?  Please, find them--there weren't many--and bring back that box.  I'll make you a good, sturdy suit of armor in return."
