Overthrowing the king.

I love the new 0.892 version it is so fun!  However I think there should be a way to overthrow the king of a faction and make yourself king, this would be fun that way the player can take over his favorite faction and hopefully that will open a new door in the gameplay (especially getting all the money you want!).
Another thing I think is missing is the ability for the player to have his own faction, name it have banners, take over castles and towns and have your companions be counts and so on, all this without asking permission from anyone, I think that would be fun.
Yet another thing that I think is missing is the ability to hunt for food, while I was besieging a castle I had problems with food, and I wonder why can’t I hunt for nearby wildlife instead of starving?  I was building a siege tower and it was annoying that some guys deserted me while I was helpless there, and all nearby towns were enemy, so I think it would be useful to be able to hunt.
That are all my suggestions for now, by the way I had another account in my other computer that blew up so I had to make a new one since I could not recover my password, sorry admin.

I say no to making yourself the king. Even if you were the son of a minor noble, you wouldn't have the bloodline to support a claim to the throne.

Have you ever seen the movie "The man who would be king"?  In that movie the guy overthrew the king with popular support so I think
you should be able to take over by force of arms or popular support.
I also forgot to mention that we need a progress bar when the game is loading so I know if my computer crashed.

Now that I thought about it maybe you get popular support by giving money to the poor and helping villages that are being raided, sort of like Robin Hood.

Notice that Robin Hood never became king.  People put a lot of stock into the divine right of kings.

As to hunting while sieging...well, if you're hunting, who's doing the sieging?  What would typically happen before a castle siege is that one side would burn all the crops.  The attackers would often do it in something called a chevauchee, trying to induce the defenders to leave the castle so as to protect their villagers, while the defenders would burn down the crops to make it difficult for the attackers to maintain a siege.  Either way, there wouldn't be much to hunt or forage.  Bring more food with you if you're going to siege something.

First off Robin Hood never became king because he wanted to restore the real king, king Richard, so lets forget the Robin Hood example, mussolini is a better example, but he is a villain.
You personally are not building the siege weapon and you can send someone else to hunt, either way hunting should be implemented in the game.

All of these have been suggested before, and recently. Please use the search button before posting, Im not being anal about it but its annoying to have the same discussion in three threads.

Thanks for the links, maybe I should rename the topic to just overthrowing the king, anyway I want to be king of the Swadians!

I would like to overthrow king Harlus and take over the Swadian kingdom, anyone else want to do that?  Or maybe overthrow another king?
As king I think I should be able to negotiate peace terms with another kingdom to make a strong alliance!

Kings were kings because of royal blood. The Ynglinge-kings of Scandinavia is one example, the Heraclean Kings of Sparta is another. Without divine blood or divine right, you would never become a monarch.

Its not like someone is going to elect you king, they take you as king or they will submit with the tip of a sword, good idea huh?

Naridill, what are you talking about?  Without blood or divine right?  What about force of arms?

You need to look at William the Conqueror, at some of those who took over the Roman Empire though they were low-born, at the later Russian monarchs...  Sure, bloodline was important, but it wasn't all important.  Men made themselves kings all the time--then they got the propaganda working on proving that they had the right blood.

That said, I don't want to be able to become king.  A lot of games model that well--most notably, Crusader Kings.  This game should not have such a wide scope.  I can understand if we give more power to the player to make his own faction, or rise up in ranks within a standing faction, but taking over a faction is pushing it.

That is exactly right, however taking over a faction I think would enrich this game alot, why is it pushing it too far?

Well, Broomaker, I think a dynamic system of leadership would have to be much more fleshed out before we started seeing usurpation of thrones.

We'd have to see succession, for one, and the potential for factional strife and civil war.  Right now, we can't even kill heroes.  That hinders a lot.

So if death is introduced, and the ability to have faction heirs and succession, and the notion of titles to claim, rather than fiefs...  I mean, we don't even know if the king orders other generals to do things...  There's just a lot that has to be developed before usurpation can even be considered.

Yeap !

The idea of a king by blood line was not the rule everywhere. Until the reign of Phillip II of France (end of the XIIth, beginning of the XIIIth centuries), the king of France was elected. Phillip II just made is new born son be elected, and, therefore, ignited the "blood line monarchy" in France.
Moreover, the imperial throne was an elective function. It is Charles V who made it hereditary.

And you don't only have the arms and/or the popular support to became king. Just think about other "solutions" ("Damn! The king is dead during the tournament !" or "the boar hunt, and his only son has 'accidentally' died last week !" Or just think Medici's)...

Then, if your are noble, you are a potential heir, with more or less chances to inherit, depending which place you have on the heir list. Tiltles equal fiefs (a least during the Middle Ages).
You can have a lot of fiefs whit "big" titles (like count or duke), but if you are the last on the heir list, you have almost no chances to inherit.
The solution can be found in applying the Medici's method on a lot of people... Even if we can't kill heroes, we can imprison them...

Exactly what I was thinking, and then  become king!

Well, excuse me but divinity can be bought. I think the challenge should be to have high disposition with all other nobles/heroes of the throne you are eyeing.

Or simply eliminate the opposition, by force of arms.

@Kon_Air : yes, it is what Clovis did. He got baptised to be crowned by the Church, but alredy was king of the Franks...

@Spanish Broomaker : what do you thing about a more "political" sided game, including some "Iwas cleaning my blade and the shot suddenly happened" or "he died just after his 'eleven o'clock soup'" ?

Exactly or have the people revolt either way is fun!
So my point is, we need to be able to overthrow the king in M&B.

Yeah !

"Jacqueries" are fun.
You can agitate people to make them revolt, and then you go and speak to the lord, say him you will help calming down the stuff in exchange of money or one of his fief (allready done in realty)...
