Opinion of Town Tournaments?

Intro first. Playing POP 3.X. I understand tournaments are supposed to be mid-game, not for early game. I'm about level 33 with weapon proficiencies of around 300.

I'm having trouble with winning tournaments that have no horses in them, mainly because the enemies are VASTLY superior to mine.
When I look at my teammates and see that they are veteran fighters or my companions. I know I'm done for.

Why?

Hero Adventurers and Champion Fighters. I'm not too sure about the Champion Fighters part... but I know Hero Adventurer's stats.
Weapon proficiency of 500 makes them killing machines in the arena. You can parry their attacks but just when you have that timing window, it's not even there - because he's already following up with another attack. This just makes tournaments not fun.

Regarding the Noldor tournament, I can understand those being really hard due to the prize pool.

Has anyone had good success with town tournaments with Good Combat AI and Full Damage on?

Or are the devs considering changing the NPC tourney pool for POP 4.x? Or revising weapon proficiencies? I don't even mind the prize pool dropping, but the only tournaments I have good results with is the one in Sarleon.

You should be able to land a hit after blocking if your weapon proficiencies are around 300 for the melee weapons. For me, I invested in Athletics and Weapon Master so I could step out of their range after hitting them (axe vs axe) and to stay at the furthest weapon range while striking (2 handed sword). For group battles, I use my teammates to distract the enemy and attacked them from the back.

I think one of my biggest problems is that I'm a Knight Tank.

Being a Knight Tank, my Athletics is I think either 1 or 0. Maybe I should up that a bit to see if my survivability improves.

Wow, never had much problem with Tournies myself, other than the ones where I end up with Javelins (Because I don't invest in Thrown stuff) and end up against Sword and Board or something like that.

Yeah, I just got mad and did the same thing with my weapon profs and excelled at the tournament.

Then I was ashamed of myself, reverted the save and my character back.

Depends on game and strangely on damage to player:smile:) every time i used 1/4 damage to player i didn't get hit for more than 4 times. When it was at full damage i got KO very early but play with full damage:razz:
And yes, if you get a horse then you will surely win:grin:
Stick with team mates in tournaments, try to get a horse and a better weapons and get athletics at least 5 and 60 hp

When fighting on foot it's a matter of luck, really. I have won a tournament in Windholm for instance, though my greater achievement was another: In the previous version of the mod (the original Μ&Β) I was around lv. 5 at most and still won the tournament in Janos!!!! Yes, the one where you face the Immortals. I was lucky because in the final I faced an Immortal and each of us carried a crossbow. Keeping my distance, moving sideways in a great circle and timing my attacks correctly when he reloaded, gave me the victory. Having any other weapon in the game, I 'd lose. So, it's mostly about luck.

But, you know what? It's better this way. Dominating each and every tournament would be booooooring. This way, things are more interesting, plus it gives an air of authenticity in the game. There are tournaments you may excel at (most probably those in Sarleon and Marleons - being the easiest ones, at least according to me), allowing you to identify yourself with specific towns. You might say something like "yeah, I suck at the Empire cities, but, at the Sarleon cities, I 'm king of the hill. I 've won the tournament at Sarleon X times, at Marleons X, at Laria X..."  and so on. I like that.

I never have a problem with tournaments, earliest I won is at level 2 in Sarleon with good AI and full damage. The AI still suck at couching.

Now on foot its a different story, I beaten it at around level 18 but theoretically I could beat it at earlier levels if I have big 2 handers or missile duels with high level opponents.

Yea, Tournaments in this game are not meant to be won at "Level 1" or "Level 2' as some people have stated, they are mid to end game type mini-games for PoP..

The only one you can get lucky and win right off the bat is if the tournament is held in Sarleon, since it's just all Jousting, as the AI has never been good at that.. (Also that's a WB thing in general, not a PoP thing..) Other then that, the others you'll get your chance down the line as you level up.. You should at least win your first tournament around level 17-20 as people have stated.. Also, the throwing weapon tournaments, like in D'Shar territories, etc.. don't get frustrated if you still lose that, as I still lose them and one of my chars is in his mid 30s too, lol..

regards,

MP

It also very much depends on your character. If you play a mounted knight then of course jousting tournaments are the way to go. With my foot archer or 2 hander I would avoid those as my riding and polearm skills were poor (takes forever for the lance to "couch", and being de-horsed was easy if you have no maneuverability). On the other hand my horse archer rocks in the D'Shar tournaments, while the 2 hander would struggle. The 2 hander would dominate in any infantry match due to his high powerstrike and athletics but would be wiped out in archery fights.

Go for (and bet) on the tournaments which suit you character, use the others for practice and experience (and dont bet).

Actually.. You should always bet, at least the First Round only which will give you the most pay off.. 100 Denars is not to much, and if you go far and happen to win the tournament you get a nice little bonus when you didn't expect anything at all.. However, I would suggest not betting past the first round if you feel you don't think you can go far in the tournaments just yet.

Yeah I usually follow the always bet on round one standard. Then when I check the later rounds and see I'm surrounded by champion fighters and hero adventurers, I know the odds are more against me than they state it is...

One little tip that's saved my butt in a lot of Tournament rounds is to remember you can pick up the weapons of defeated sorts.  End up with a weapon you suck at?  Well, just pick up something else!

By the way, in the WB version of the mod, the tournament at Sarleon became more difficult, mainly due to three reasons:

1. (The obvious one) Couching is more tricky now to be made.

2. Opponents couch as well. Not much, still more than they used to.

3. You do not carry a club with you now, just your lance. So, gone the certain victory when all you had to do was de-horse your opponent, then get off your horse, take your club and batter him. Even if you de-horse him, you still have to remain mounted with the chance of not timing your couch correctly and your opponent hitting you. And one more thing: if the opponent de-horses you, things become very complicated, since you have only your lance to rely on. From then on, it needs strategy. I remember an instance when, being at the final, I was de-horsed. I tried to avoid my opponent's blows, all the time pushing him towards the wall, preferably a corner where it was difficult for him to maneuver. From then on, I grabbed my lance with both hands and kept aiming for the head or, at least, the body. Finally I 've made it. Never before have I felt so proud for beating the tournament at Sarleon. That tourney was tough. And to complete a perfect day, I joined the feast and got married! All in one stone.

So far I had best luck at Ravenstern tournaments, especially if your character can shoot/throw. Their special competitors are Raven-spears, which are relatively easy to deal with, and most of the time you get a horse. Don't ever step into an Empire tournament though...

the athletics skill is the stat that seems to help me the most in the tournaments also if your playing a knight character I am guessing you will have very heavy armour and weapons, before you enter the tournament remove all the weapons from your character and also look at buying some light armour with high stats.  This will make you move a lot faster as you will not be encumbered and as such you can move around the back of any attacking group as others have said and smack them about.

I also agree with the advice to pick up other weapons.

Good luck with your future efforts though

what needs to happen is for the arena to allow you to pick your own weapons, either from all training weapons in the game or all training weapons available in that specific arena.  for example, at Torba, you could choose between javelin+shield or bow+dagger, or at Valonbray, choose either 1h axe+shield or 1h sword+shield.
and maybe choose to be mounted or unmounted, or just be mounted based on the weapon you choose and the town the arena is in.  for example, choosing the bow in D'Shar country would have you always mounted, whereas in most other towns choosing the bow you would still have a random chance to be mounted(and of course being always unmounted in Fierdswine arenas)

As long as I don't have to fight a 1 on 1 with a ranged weapon against a guy with shield I'm happy  Though those hero adventurers are scary, took 2 hits with an axe to destroy my shield  :???:

Great idea there. Someone should pick it up .
