On tournaments when on foot what is the best way to counter a lancer charge?

Well, as the topic says. I mean when 1 x 1 and on foot with melee weapon I have to evade/counter the initial charge. Right now I just try to strafe but often fail.
Any suggestions?

mmm... i don't really remember it as a big problem, but i'll try to think of what i do.

hug a wall.  if you can't avoid the lance completely, put yourself directly in front of the horsre and let him run you over.  practice horses don't do much charge damage, and odds are your opponent will be stuck on a wall afterward so you can kill him or his horse.

note that if you don't do anything except run forward for a few seconds, you will start running faster.  this can make it easier to position yourself properly.

if you've got a shield you can eat the lance with your shield and proceed to the beat down.  parrying down with a melee weapon will stop a lunge but not a couched lance.

If you have a shield, brace yourself - it will probably break but it'll save your life.
Otherwise, run to the left or right. Don't just strafe while looking at the opponent, you should put away your weapon and run in that direction. You'll usually be fast enough to beat them. If you're still having trouble, beef up the Athletics skill or unequip your boots before entering the tournament. (You'll be less encumbered)

run at the horse that is the only blind spot you won't be couched for over 9000 damage, but you still will take some damage (probably only like 3 charge) but if you are lucky you will stop the horse

oh and you can actually chamber block a couched lance.  if you want to try something like that, just remember that you only get one chance...

If you started with a polearm (they own against horses) the horse shouldn't be such a problem.

Problem with that theory Isuck is that there are NO polearm loadouts EXCEPT having a lance of your own in nilla tournaments.

Was going to suggest the chamberblock as well, it's the only way apart from throwing yourself at the horse that you'll stop a couch from getting you if you don't have a shield. Couched lances go straight through the thrust style block. Of note though, the AI very well may just try to thrust you rather than couching. You can tell by the animation when they get their attack ready. If they do that you can always block.

Really, your biggest problem will be if you get an archer and you're forced to make a dodge instead of a block.

I usually run strait toward the opponent and about to lances length I start jump and attack the enemy, if you get hit by the lance at least it'll not be a couched attack and on the same time you hurt the opponent.

Try running to the right, as there are no left handed characters and the horse is most deadly when it's to your left.

Stand there and take it like a man.

OR, you can be a coward, and jump out of the way when they are close to you. (Like 5 feet away). This usually works for m-, Err...Cowards.

In the first charge, don't ride right at the oponent. Go left/right and avoid the charge. Ride in circles around the other champion and use the attack-button to attack with a normal thrust attack. Kill the horse/rider with thrust attacks. If you kill the horse, you'll need a lot of bad luck to lose the fight in 1 vs 1.

This is safe and works even on full damage 9 times out of 10. However, I don't feel like a champion when I go for the horse instead of the rider. I consider that to be dishonorabel, so I try to thrust-attack the rider instead.

Try it. This tactic makes the Praven tournaments easymode even on full difficulty.

Sorry, I failed to get the point. I tought you said 1 vs 1 where both had horse + lance. You ment as infantry.

If you have a lance, try to stop the horse with a thrust attack ofc. If not, keep the shield up and try to stand close to a wall and see if you can move so the horse hits you. He can't aim the lance exacly to the front so that's where you want to be hit. Once he loses his momentum and stands stuck to the wall, he should be somewhat easy to beat.

2 hander, charge at the horse, jump and swing at the right time. You will fall but he will be the one that doesn't get up.
