I want to know if there is anyway you can edit the textures of heraldic armors. Like say i want to make the tabards chainmail look like the bluish chainmail you see on the surcoat. I have tried using DDS converter and editing both the specular and normal, but when i go ingame the surcoat no longer holds the appearance of the banner you choose, instead it is brown and black and ugly just as it looks on the non-specular dds. Is there a certain file format i have to use or something? Any help would be appreciated.  :)

No. Just note that the alpha channel is not the specular map but defines which pixels are used to display the heraldry.

Actually you are incorrect.  There are several formats of DDS files.  To keep the alpha Channels, you need to save the DDS file in DXT5 format, the other DDS files can be DXT1 format.

Now you will have to start over, or re-merge in the original alpha channels from the original.

You're right, the need of using DXT5 when saving .dds files with alpha channel probably isn't too obvious...

The other part(the alpha channel is used to define where the heraldry is to be shown) is correct, though. There is a seperate specular map you might want to edit along with the diffuse(color) map too.

I should have been more specific as to where you were wrong....

You were very correct there.

So i now have a DXT5.dds like you said, however i searched for alpha channels and from what i gather, it is basically a transparent texture? I noticed the meshes in BRF edit were white and slightly transparent while mine was solid and black. So how can i create an alpha channel to merge. Do i need photoshop or a higher end photo editing software?

If you read my earlier post, you would see that I said to start over with the original texture.  When you save a file as DXT1, the alpha info is lost.  You can how ever copy it from the original, but to make life easier, start over.  Make sure that the software you are using to edit the DDS files supports alpha channels.
