Oh Lawd! Can We Stop With the Realism Thing?

Seriously, can we drop it? I know Mount&Blade is "realistic" because Sheeznaz the Purple Wizard isn't going to come and cast Ungulate Level IV on me and kill me with a Llama, but some of these suggestions would be terribly unfun. But have we forgotten that Calradia is a fictional land? Where maybe some things aren't EXACTLY like the real world?

Begin rant:

You want a realistic game? Here's some good suggestions:

  • Camp outside your enemy's castle for a few months while he wastes away of hunger and boredom in front of his computer.
  • Speaking of starving, make sure you're nice and hungry and probably somewhat drunk before you start to play. The only thing harder than food for an army to come by back then was probably potable water...so make sure you bring your booze!
  • Also, march quite a ways first, (probably about 30 miles a day) carrying all your stuff with you. I doubt many of us could even make it even 20 miles carrying a stick, even with good shoes.
  • Oh, yeah, get rid of about 80% of the metal weapons, since the yard of steel used to make a sword was prohibitively expensive during such a time period. Much more than the cost of a horse.
  • But we're not taking THOSE to war all that often because A) most of us can't ride them all that well B) we probably don't have the right equipment for it and C) the horse is probably worth more than you.
  • We can bring some mules and donkeys though, they'll help when we have to bring the bodies back.
  • Make about half of the team peasants with no more than pitchforks, clubs, lumber axes (with blade carved from rock), hammers, or anything with an economical purpose to it.
  • The other half of the team should be an archer of some sort, probably armed with their trusty hunting bows.
  • And speaking of weapons, plenty of these, especially wooden ones, should break on a regular basis, leaving you with...your fists.
  • Armor? Uhm...how about that nice baggy shirt you've been wearing your whole life. Maybe some leather if you're a good hunter...and it's not exactly the quality of **** you buy from the mall.
  • Metal armor? LOL. If you're quite rich enough, sure. It's hot, heavy, uncomfortable. It doesn't fit you right (and you look retarded) because you inherited it from your fat-assed uncle when he got killed in it AND you're probably gonna die in it too.
  • But speaking of being rich, don't forget to put the veterans, nobles (read anyone that actually has a decent set of equipment), in the back where they won't get hurt until all the farmers are dead, or maybe they can run away if things turn ****ty.
  • And speaking of running away, as a consequence of all this nonsense, a good portion of the army should take the first opportunity to flee the battle ****ting their pants with terror and dysentery.
  • Oh, and don't forget about all the **** laying around...everywhere.  Especially from the horses,  who by the way, are also running away, sometimes with riders on them.

But how do I know? I'm just an idiot on the forums, like the rest of us. Maybe I should stick to what I know...which is, oh yeah, what's fun in the GAME...

Sir, no, sir. No it doesn't, sir. It was wrong for me to speak out of line, sir. Sorry to have upset you, sir.

umm...What exactly is your thread about? Are you saying that trying to make a game realistic is bad? A game should be as realistic as possible without ruining the fun of the gameplay IMHO. What is wrong with that? It is what I like about M&B.

Oh Lawdy! Oh help me Jeebus! I'm not funny anymore!

Anyway, that's my point. Nobody stops to think about whether or not changing something to make it more "realistic" would actually be fun.

Yes they do. Most likely you just (completely reasonably) disagree that the extra realism would be fun in those cases. Some people like hardcore realism, some people like dynasty warriors.

Maybe that's because you don't frequent the suggestions board that much?
Good point, I don't really care too much about what people think as long as I like it.

This thread has nothing to do with Warband, but if you don't like realism, there are plenty of (quite well made) fantasy mods.

I don't think anyone was suggesting anything as "far-fetched" as any of the realistic things that you posted in the OP. Which means a lot of the realistic things that were proposed would STILL be fun and would STILL make the game interesting.

I don't think many of you really read the post..because if you had you wouldn't be taking me so seriously. It's too wordy. I shall impale myself for it.

Oh no! I know it was meant as a joke just by the mere ridiculous nature of the ideas, but ideas that ridiculous are not getting proposed. So therefore they are validly looked at as options to include in the game.

Ordo many of the things in your first post are unrealistic too

But we get your point.  However, there is a fine balance between realism and fun.  IMO if you can make something more realistic without reducing the fun factor,  you should.

I agree that new suggestions should not be based on realism but rather on how to balance out the game and make it more fun. It's impossible to make a perfectly realistic game, and if it was, it would be incredibly difficult to learn. I mean, the melee combat is very fun, but it is only parrying and attacking, not the wrestling and punching that often came along with it. And that's for the best, really.

At this specific moment, from what I see from the vids and read on the forums, I think the armor encumbrance walking speed reduction should go or have less effect. I really don't like what I see: a battlefield full of naked Nords with 2h axes. They should wear mail armor or jerkins, just because this looks goddamn dumb. Actually, here we see two realistic things (armor encumbrance and everyone wearing armor) that for one or other reason exclude eachother, because the game combat system cannot be made perfectly realistic.

The videos you see isn't because armor slows you down too much, it is because it doesn't protect you as well as it should. Supposedly.
Also people just like walking around naked.(Nekkid Alliance)
