I usually start with a cube, make the hilt from it, and then extrude the grip and blade from it. I also generally only use a 8 sided grip, as in the game it's only seen in the inventory screen and in the scabbard, and second you can barely tell the difference between a 8 and 12 sided polygon at that scale.
