Whatever man, take the quotes from people who didn't get jobs because they "graduated" with ****ty student portfolios consisting of one to two week class assignments. I've seen students graduate because they could afford it, not because they were good. However, I walked in after being self-taught for 5 years and refined my skills and learned techniques I wouldn't have found otherwise. I got a job because I was GOOD at it like a couple dozen students I knew. Want a job, post on polycount and be a bad ass at what you do, in the end, your work is what stands for itself.

My point being, if you NEED to be taught, go to college to get started. If you can figure it out in you're own time, use the internet. Most of the things we learned came from the internet too and professors told us a degree isnt worth the money we put in. I dropped out due to personal reasons but already was employed as a weapons modeler at a studio in Henderson. The Art Institute was expensive, but had industry professionals teaching us and I liked it.

no, i am not taking quotes from people who didn't get jobs. i am quoting industry professionals and those who went there and said it's **** (and most of them say that the college didn't help them at all, and it was just them busting their ass, and most regret going and wish they had taken courses instead).

you don't have to tell me that you have to be good to get a job, i completely understand the game, but 100k for someone to teach you something that can be found on the internet for free is insane. just by taking few really good courses you are good to go and at most it's going to cost you 5k. and those courses are taught by industry professionals who will critique your work and help you out.

in the end you can always ask pros on polycount for nothing and many of them will take their time and help. so in the end 100k+ for teaching you 3D basics is disgusting.

Well (my shamefull excuse to try and get free models), all this talk of portfolios and stuff, i need a few things modelling for my own mod. So if anyone wants to add to their own collection or even just want something for practise, send me a pm and ill tell you what i need.

Also to contribute to the current conversation. In my own experience, though not related to the game industry but college/learning in general. Some people find it alot easier to learn with someone available for hands on help. College obviously supplies this in the form of a lecturer. Though if its anything like the colleges i went to (for electrical and engineering qualifications) its more of just a doss!

I done a night course with adults who was more keen to get on and learn and i found i learnt more in 6 months doing that than i did 2 years day release. So my advice would be to try and get on a night course if at all possible. It also makes it easier to work and learn at the same time because you can also uphold a full time job. Of course this may not be possible for the higher level degrees you are probably wanting. As for uni, to me that just seems as an excuse to take a couple of years out doing nothing whilst living on a loan.

Update on my Thirsha piece, don't mind the graininess, as it's a +- quick render. It would take 4+ hours to render with enough passes so they don't appear, so yeah:

Large version:
13421360833_f1c55a0d53_o.jpg

-Finished environment map;
-Finished general posing (I still need to close her hands);
-Added spear;
-Finished wing membrane texture/shaders;
-Finished metal texture/normalmap and added rivets.

Still a lot of little thingies and the hair to do. Oh boy, does hair simulation clog my computer.

@Weren:

I really like the metal bump effects, and the texture in general is looking quite good.

Two simple things you could do to improve the looks of the padded cloth are 1) add a bump for those little hills of cloth between seams; 2) add normalmap info for those seams, and clean the texture overlay on them in the diffuse.

Curious to see how will it look with other coifs, keep 'em coming  :smile:

Your Thirsha remains one of the coolest and most impressive things I've seen in this thread, and I've been following it for quite a while.

Since around page 500 about 4 years ago, now that I checked. :lol:

I did night courses working 18 hrs a day (two jobs, full time and part time 3d artist and student). It was not easy, but the experience of it was worth it. It is a 3 yr accelerated bachelors degree at Art Institute. I understand what you're saying and its completely true which is why I went that route. Day classes on my days off with 12 hr assignments, then working and going to class and taking my breaks between jobs and night classes doing assignments. Dedication is the thing they primarily teach us. If you cant handle it then you're not going to make it since starting out as an artist is very difficult. But even on disability from my injury I am going to free lance and design things from a chair. Its a nice fall back even if you dont last in the game biz. Architectural design is easy enough once you know the ins and outs of 3D since you can low ball anyone who charges too much if you're in hard times like I am with an injury.

Here is a sword I made. Can't really texture it, don't have Photoshop as it is super expensive and Gimp is crap.
The mittle part is suposed to be a animal skull, and the horns are the things that are sticking out (don't know what its called), but you can't really see that as I would have to draw it on to there, or take the model into some kind of sculpting software and sculpt the skull out. Used blender. I preferably use Maya and Mudbox, but I only have acess to those in school.

These softwares are REALLY expensive, and I'm a future game developer/3D artist (atleast I hope so), and I want to be able to do stuff from home. I only have acess to all the professional softwares in school then how am I supposed to learn at home, on my free time, and when I get into the professional industry I wont be using Blender or Gimp... I need Maya, Mudbox, Photoshop and somekind of Drawing tablet. That is almost like $8.000!!! and I have no job, I'm 17.. young and I want to learn early. Worst thing is, that when I finish school, I don't have acess to any of the software. I'll probably have to get a job, get a steady income and then take a loan. Such a long road, and there is no way that I will get a job as a 3D artist without a Showreel or a Protofolio where I show what I can and have done, and I don't want to go to University. University would be another 3 - 4 years, and then I'm like 24 years old. A long road indeed, and there is so much I need and want to learn but I don't know where to start. Maybe, in the 2 next years of school, we will start making more advanced stuff. Right now we are making a fictional creature out of mud, and a 2D, pixel platform game. So boring, but I don't know, maybe it will have a bigger purpose in the future. But right now I can't really give all my focus on the Grapichs design part of school, there is other subjects like Math, History, English, Swedish, Gymnastics ect ect. It's really holding me back from taking in and learning as much as possible from these 3 years that I'm given to learn Grapichs Design. Maybe University is a "must do" thing, to become really good.

Blender may not be the best software choice if you're aiming to get a conventional job, but it has a lot of capabilities.

You can do everything inside it, from sculpting, retopology, baking, rigging to animating.

Its new render engine, Cycles, is very powerful and can make very realistic stuff.

Besides, you have a built in physics engine, that has from cloth and hair simulation to destruction, also the particle editor is really good.

To translate that to game models, the only thing you need is the right export script.

For texturing, try Krita. A good tablet isn't much more expensive than U$200.00 too.

There's no impediment for you to download either UDK or Unity and start making **** happen with all those free tools, if that's what you want for your life, go for it.

24 isnt that old at all. When i left school at 16 i tried to get an apprenticeship but no one would take me on, said i needed college experience first. Isnt that what an apprenticeship is for?? So i spent 5 years drifting between jobs not really knowing what i was going to do. I then thought i best buckle down and at least get some qualifications, i had done roofing but the moneys **** and i didnt like it much. I also build computers and media centers but it doesnt earn enough to qualify as a full time job. I even done boxing for a few years and even though i was pretty good i soon realised it was more luck than judgement to earn big bucks from it.

So i started a night course at college to learn electrical installation. I was 21, the course was meant to be 3 years long and cost a total of about £5000, thats without an grand for tools ect. After 2 years i applied for an apprenticeship as an engineer, the experience and qualifications from my electrical course helped me to get the position. I was 23 and at the time only just fell into the correct age, any older and id have had to pay something like 6k a year. So i decided not proceed with my 3rd year electrical course and started day release college on an apprentice wage. At the time i had a mortgage and had about £5 a week left to myself, i was literally living on beans and water! I couldnt even afford to insure my car, so drove without insurance for over two years!

My course lasted 3 years then it took another year of being a qualified engineer before i was deemed to have enough experience to apply for another job. So i applied elsewhere for a proper engineering role and secured the job.

Im now on over 40k a year plus overtime! I still want to do a HNC though and take a higher electrical course, thats another 4 years! Which if i start now i will be 32 when im finaly where i want to be.

So it doesnt matter how old you are. My mate is at cambridge uni now doing a computer science degree, he turned 30 last month.

Life is quite a thing isn't it? It takes money to get money. Time/Resources. I can see it being a game, just not very balanced. I think about rage quitting from time to time.

autodesk has student versions of their software, that's 3ds max or maya student version and mudbox, it's all you need. use gimp for time being, if that doesn't work you can always turn to torrenting, which 95 percent of students do.

there is always a way.

24 isn't late, in the end it doesn't matter what your age is, it all comes down to your portfolio and your work. start on anything, watch youtube tutorials, a lot of them - see what you really want to do, read polycount wiki.

it's early for you to say that this is what you want to do, you have to be at least a year into it and see how things work to decide that you want to do this for a job. good luck.

Yeah, thats the truth. You can get really good as you get older just by looking online for "how to get autodesk software, adobe software." etc.

Look up modeling tutorial sites after that. Then texturing sites. You get STUFF.

Roman gatehouse, anyone?

Not ready yet. Tomorrow I'll finish those corners, add small details, make interior and other fun stuff.

Planning also walls and towers to accompany it.

Going to my OSP pack  :wink:

Wow, I am new to these forums, but that took me a moment to realize it is MB. Really nice.
