You are naïve. Humanity wasn't worth having faith in since the beginning of times.

Good point.

I know you don't believe me, but assume that I am speaking the truth, and that I created this mod... Wouldn't it be very funny to first start a thread like this so people don't believe me, so that later I can show them with a grin on my face?

I disagree, I already had a good laugh. But the point of this thread was merely to measure the popularity of this combination. It wasn't until Nemesis told me to go make it that I had to tell him I am already doing so. Cause lying is bad m'kay?

You could just take a few pictures of your work if you're already as far ahead as you claim. Constantly going "Yes I am" isn't going to make anyone believe you, sorry.

UPDATE:
NEW video!

Better FPS, some animations fixed, far faster combat!

I had to talk a little with my team mates to discuss really going public with this modification. This thread was really intended to just measure the popularity (not for a childish "told you so"), and I apologize for the confusion and me messing around about it when I was told to start making it.

A more formal introduction then. I am the Overseer dev of the Scripting department of the Oblivion Total Conversion The Middle Earth Roleplaying Project, or just MERP. In August I started this combat overhaul as a sub-mod for MERP, and with the help of a fellow animator dev called 'Middle Earth's Bane', we are now getting pretty close to release (standalone for vanilla Oblivion). We have the core system working, we just need to polish it and improve and add many more animations. Since this combat overhaul is inspired by Mount & Blade, I call it MERP & Blade. No content of Mount & Blade is used, so there are no copyright infringements. Everything in this modification is originally created by the MERP team.

The following is a demonstration video of the early beta. Note that the FPS in this video is between 10-15 because of Fraps, and thus the animations look choppy. In addition to that, the overhead strike animation suffers from a visual glitch. The "stagger" animation is especially a place holder, and will be vastly improved.

Nothing in this video is considered finished, and every aspect of it will be improved before release:

We hope you like it!

The MERP team.

Does this mean I need to crack out my old copy of Oblivion and start assembling load orders again? Damn. There go 3 days of my life.

But seriously, if this is true (since the cynic inside still quietly whispers it's an elaborate ruse), excellent work.

Haha you are unbelievable, the video isn't enough proof? Watch it full screen and at HD, and look at the fighting NPC's closely. They do the 4 directional attacks and blocks all the time. After that you can see the player with the mouse movement arrows, and you can see the character performs the corresponding attacks and blocks.

Just like in Mount & Blade, you can also hold the mouse button to prepare the attack, and also do feints by clicking with the right mouse.

Oblivion is a lot more flexible in terms of modding than Mount & Blade, which enables us to implement some things that are impossible or hard to do in M&B, for example hitting multiple targets in one attack strike. We also have a lot better movement AI, so no excessive mass hugs in combat. I am also working on a system that is better at dividing the agro between all NPC's and their enemies. The entire combat AI is overwritten by my scripts, so I have practically perfect control over what NPC's do.

On the other hand, handling animations is pretty hard to do in Oblivion, so it will never be just as smooth in Oblivion, though we can get pretty close.

Well played, this thread was going to in a troll-tastic direction. The video is good as a proof of concept, but that's it, it looks terrible on the cosmetic side of things and unwieldy, at best, on the gameplay-technical side. On the other hand, I expect this will improve drastically, you guys have pulled off a few cool things.

Hence "Eerly Beta".

Ingame it looks a lot better than in the video, because of the excessive lag when recording this. But yes, the animations lack their ending transition to the idle animation, and some of them don't have correct starting transitions as well. I also need to finetune a lot of the timers used. The animator also has a busy life, and we also still need animations for different weapon types and eventually mounted combat.

Wasn't there already an advanced swordplay mod for Oblivion with dismemberment and such? I remember downloading it at some point of time maybe a year or two ago.

This looks faking awesome

What do I need to play It , I'll certainly buy everything for this mod!
