The banking system was resuscitated by $700 billion in bailouts started by Bush (a fact unknown by a majority of Americans), and finished by Obama, with help from the Federal Reserve. It worked. The government is expected to break even on a risky bet to stabilize the global free market system. Had Obama followed the populist instincts of many in his party, the underpinnings of big capitalism could have collapsed. He did this without nationalizing banks, as other Democrats had urged.

So it turns out the free market can't exist without occasional federal life support (which consists of tax money - the same taxes constantly abated by the free market advocates).
The banks were not nationalized but who's to know if that wouldn't have been a more wise move.

It's time to diminish speculation and enforce federal control of the financial markets.

It is ironic. The FCIC(?) was made to insure the banks from collapsing, but they were all about to collapse, threatening the value of the dollar terribly, and the FCIC could not possibly insure all that money. Basically, without the bailout, we'd have seen another bloody Depression.

However, I think that was the only bailout that really needed to happen. Free market can generally survive on its own, and nationalizing the banks would been a terrible move.

I don't think America, or nearly any modern country, has a truly free market, so it's not really fair to say that America's need for bailouts proves that free markets fail. Now if you're talking about a semi-free market, then yes, it's been empirically proven that semi-free markets aren't invulnerable.
