Lots of interesting ideas here! Personally I was thinking of maps like this,
idea.jpg
Basically each side has two lines of trenches and there are also some features of no man's land scattered about. Conquest will be played as normal, hold more flags and kill  to deplete the enemy's points. Capturing one of the no man land's flags will pretty much give your team a foot hold to spawn on and launch more attacks on other no man's land flags or the enemy trench itself. In the same way, capturing a section of an enemy trench will give your team an opportunity to keep pushing and eventually conquer the enemy. Both teams have to respond immediately to lost trench sections to prevent the enemy from launching more attacks against other trench sections. The idea is that when you take flags, it gives your team more opportunities to move forward.

This can be tons of fun in squad based events. They'll need to coordinate which points to attack and defend and figure out which flags are needed most.
That would probably be the best way to do it. Of course, it's a basic setup, so there will surely be adaptations to it. Truthfully, I cant wait to see all these ideas in action.

Rig's idea gets my vote. I definitely think that there should still be separate factions for each nation, Entente-Central factions is too simple and frankly wouldn't be too much fun in my opinion. All you guys lobbying for Canadian shock troops should probably wait until they start work on a UK faction!

Yes, I agree completely. First of all, the teams would look like a huge mess. Also, in how many pictures do you see soldiers of different nations fighting together? Sure the British and French cooperated together in the same battle many times but I really doubt they ever operated within sight of each other(may be wrong). Mashing all the Etente countries and Central contries into two factions would also mean less troop variety for all countries. It really isn't going to work out. The issue you(wrath) talk about, how regiments usually don't get to fight as their chosen faction, doesn't seem to be a big deal to most regiments. Maybe it's just me but I've never heard it before.

I don't agree about "squad battles". Look at any major battle prior to 1918 and the had coordinated charges, goin over the top with whole battalions. Not little squads that one would find on the modern battle field. No offence but if these r the ideas ppl r having for this mod then ill make damn sure my event preserves reality as much as possible.

Sounds good! I'm hoping that a variety of different kinds of events will pop up, each providing a different kind of experience.

How about you base it on the reality ?

yeah, please don't make the trenches straight. It's not historical and will make trench raiding play out unhistorically (as in, pistols and melee will be useless)

Of course. That was just a quick diagram I did to show flag locations, it was never meant to actually show how the trenches will look.

Good idea, is there anything to say... Stop me from walking around the battlefield and taking the germen back trench?

Maybe if somehow taking a trench will need 2-4 people instead of being able to capture a trench on your own....

Barbed wire, enemy fire, Possibly mines *wink* *Wink*

You would be a wizard to find any reported instance of mines used in ww1 outside of tsingtao. The creeping barrage and narrow frontline made mine laying pretty impossible.

As for stopping people taking the rear trench - it would seem a good idea to me to only allow the trenches to be taken in proper succession, that is, secure all of the trench nearest your side before the next one along can be captured. Most FPS handle area capturing pretty well. Consider red orchestra's "slow" capture which can be accelerated by the presence of more friendlies.

to be honest though, i cant see anyone on either side getting that far without being spotted and shot, considering there's no prone position

mines were planted underground in tunnels, they would put them under the enmey tranches.

The biggest amount of explosives detonated in the war was an underground bomb

It left a huge crater that is massive

you are not describing an explosive mine at this point, you are describing the act of mining/tunneling in a different sense. That obviously cant be portrayed in the MnB engine and wouldnt be a measure against rushing like you mentioned either.
