put them in the prison in the towns

Thx! That gave me a fair chance to wipe out a faction. Though it was a lot, lot, lot of battles with not the best odds... When I captured the 13th enemy warlords (considering the occasional fleeing of another one I must have captured more than 15, which means probably ~50 battles. Wow.)  Finally the accompanying party of the Khan became notably smaller. Before the only (not unimportant) difference was that more towns and forts had no noble lord inside the gates (as they were running around) which made taking towns/forts easier.

Long story short: That advise is awesome!

Yepp, total M&B newb. The thought that not towns/cities decide the military strength of a faction but the number of lords was totally new for me.

And to reply to the original post: I don't mind that lords with a fief respawn with cheated military strength [you can make much better decisions than the AI, that's also "cheating"], but it would be nice when a lord who lost his fief respawns with a smaller and perhaps only mercenary host.

A few (ingame) weeks ago I became Marshall of Sweden. Nice. Took some Lords and with their troops three castles/cities. Soon enough those Lords left. I then managed to hold off some weak and one strong counterattacks over the next weeks and after that I rode far away to fetch some new lords that may be more eager to wage war against the enemies and returned.

Now the problem: Poland got also mauled by Moscow, it appears, and suddenly I have 15 enemy Lord with nearly 2000 troops at one of the newly taken towns. How am I supposed to defeat that? And more important: What am I supposed to do? If I beat them (probably only after I lost 1-3 towns/castles because I need time to fetch some more lords to support me) they will come again all at once.
True, I may take three lords captive, but then still twelve fresh and newly spawned enemy armies will come at me while my lords are either at my side with only half an army or slowly recruiting at their home towns. And I am probably still traveling around and replenishing my own losses (after I retook the probably lost settlements)

Is there any smarter way to deal with this threat?

Oh, and while I am on it... is there any way to remove a mercenary commander, for example, from a settlement I own?
