NPC Heroes...Invisible?

I have a couple of fiefs, one of them being neary enemy borders, so I enlist the help of the Hero NPC's and station them, with large armies (178 fairly high level troops), next to said fief and yet any enemy raiding parties just waltz by and raid my fief.

Now, I don't expect my NPC's to chase after anyone heading to my fief but I'd at least expect an enemy party would hesitate raiding a fief that is surrounded by 3 large armies.

Are the NPC's Figments of my characters Imagination or what?

I've only stationed troops with my NPCs when I was seiging a castle so I can have an assortment of different troops to use if the situation changes. Or if I just get owned and need more.
