Nothing grand, just a suggestion about blacksmiths

We all have hunted for that particular weapon/armor (great sword, black armor, great axe, etc.), but when we do find it, it's cracked, chipped, rusty or bent. And it gnaws our soul eternally. What if blacksmiths could repair them? I'm not sure whether it's realistic or not, but it would help. Although it should be expensive. 1/4 of the original price, or something?

edit: Maybe weapons and armor might get dented or bent or whatnot? then you would have to take them to the smith for repairing?

I like it. However, there should be only a certain, relatively small chance that the weapon quality can be brought up to balanced, or even masterwork weapon once that modifier is introduced. There's nothing a blacksmith could do for a sword that I know of if it wasn't forged to be balanced in the first place.

I like the idea, maybe there could be a quest associated with the request for the upgrade.

Example...

Smith: can I help you sir?

Player: Yes indeed my good man, I am in need of your skill to repare this weapon.

Smith: I am sorry ma lord.. As you can see I have more work than I can keep up with.... Perhaps if you could bring me some Iron and a few sword that I can sell... I think I could find time for your special request if you could do me that favor.

We would still have to pay for the work too, and I think a high price is a good idea. Maybe 25% per level of upgrade, so that in worst condition a repair/upgrade to best quality would be 125% of the cost.

Thoughts?

Player: How about you just do as I say and I don't have to rip you a new arsehole where your forehead is currently located?

Smith: Ah, I shall get right on it.

I like it. But a weapon should only be able to be repaird up to "normal" quality. Being able to commission the construction of a finer quality version would also be a nice touch.

I like it.

Weapon and Armor having a slight chance to get a prefix downgrade.

A select few blacksmiths might also be able to make a custom weapon for you. You specify the type and it might take a week. You come back and there is a slightly increased chance that it will have a positive prefix modifier (like heavy, balanced or keen, whatever). There have been a few posts about this before. The downgrading stuff in combat part seems like an engine issue while the blacksmith making stuff seems more like a mod-builder kind of thing that anyone could do later.

Not sure where you're going with all this "slight chance" stuff. If you pay him to make you the highest quality sword possible, then it sure as hell better be of that quality. Also, I'm not sure about the blacksmith quest thing. You give him a job, and you pay him for it. That's all it should take. Maybe a quest might accelerate the process, but his acceptance of the project shouldn't be dependant on it.
