Not keeping formations when attacking

When I order my men to make a shield wall they make the shield wall at the place they are. But if I tell them to move or to attack, they break the formation.

Is this normal?

how are you making them move?

If you use F2-F1 (ten steps up) or hold F1 they should walk slowly and keep formation.

IIRC when you tell the men to charge (F3) they will break formation and charge the enemy.  If you hold F1 and drop the flag on the enemy then your men should advance in formation until very close then they will charge.  They will lose formation but the effect won't be so dramatic since they are charging from much closer range.  I have to check this again though after work to make sure...

Happens to me also. Holding F1 and placing the flag where I want them to move. For instance about 20 - 30 meters from the enemy, and the infantry just charges in by themselves. So now I am only using the advance 10 paces option. But it is annoying when you want to move your formations in another direction when the enemy is close.

that is actualy a feature. Hold F1, move your mouse to a enemy unit (like archers), release... your troops will charge the archers and then come back.

F1-hold-release is used to move big distances, to create a formation, to attack from flanks, etc. Not to order your troop to move 20m when its near the enemy.
