Reason we can no longer charge and fire is it was deemed too powerful by everybody thus disallowed in all linebattles.

Sorry to disagree, but most firing in a charge was not even staying in a line.

You may still charge, keep aligned, stop aligned, fire a volley at 10 paces and then keep up with the charge.
Problem is most regiment cannot keep cohesion to do that volley and everyone would fire out of line.

It is a hard call yes, not retarded. Did see it happen and was devastating. On the plus side it looked pretty awesome. Technically isn't firing in a charge.
