No more crashes and audio issues!

I frequently encountered crashes and distorted music/missing sound effects until I tried to mess around with the DX hardware acceleration. Going from max to minimum made no difference but after completely disabling the sound hardware acceleration, the game runs like a charm.

In case you don't know how to disable HW-acceleration:
Click 'START' -> 'Run' and type in 'dxdiag'
Go to the 'Sound' Tab and drag the slider all the way to the left (no HW acceleration)

I'm going to try that. When I lose my sound and make it to the end of the battle (sometimes the game crashes before the end) and then save, I get a corrupted save game, losing all my progress.

Yes, now as you mention it, this happened to me, too.
If I was in a fight and the SFX would stop (the music kept playing) and I clicked on "Attack" to start the next round of battle, the game would crash, often corrupting my savegeme.
This happened quite often and more frequently over time. A reboot often helped then.

Also I always wondered why the sound is so quiet in M&B. With disabled HW-acceleration it is MUCH louder (as it should be).

And it didn't crash once since then.

works-partially.
Choppiness is not completely but almost gone, and sounds are much louder.
Unfortunately, load times triple.

I don't even have any audio hardware and yet the sound still gets choppy for me after playing a while.

When I put hardware acceleration off, the sound sounds terrible  So, I'll just reboot right away after I lose my sounds in a battle (as i did a minute ago).

edit:
Oh by the way, when I put hardware acceleration off a guy kept repeating his last dying-scream while lying on the ground dead. Maybe that causes the sound to totally disappear when you have hardware acceleration on.

Hmm, I didn't experience such problems.
For the record, I have a Terratec EWS 6Fire 24/96
