Idk if this is something that's just not implemented yet, but based off the skill descriptions and such, you are supposed to get engineering exp from the siege stage on map AND from using engines during the actual battle. Instead, I only get throwing exp when hitting targets with engines (primarily using mangonel and hitting groups of troops, and a little bit of hitting walls and enemy engines). Sooo, unless you are leading the army and taking time to use siege engines, that seems to be the only way to level and it's fairly slow. Throwing exp doesn't really make since in it's place and I'm not sure if that's supposed to happen like that
