Night Fighter?

Knight
I have gone from my early nooby days when I always stopped the army at dusk and waited til Dawn before starting out. As time passed and necessity prevailed I slept in the saddle with my guys to not lose valuable time. Now though I find I rest at night to avoid battle!

I have slowly come to the conclusion that my disciplined way of battling can't cope with nightfighting

- anyone else!?

If your current style can't "cope with" fighting at night, then perhaps you should work on a new style. There's always a battle to be had, and why not have it when it's dark?

I fight whenever I need to. There's no sense in letting the enemy be just because the sun is down.

Walk all day and night, fight all day and night. The only time I camp is to take out a new book to read. The only time I stay in a city or castle is if I'm too scared to leave it. The little buggers are paid to fight and that's what they'll do, they can sleep when they're dead.

Besides if you never fight at night you miss the incredible starscapes, and the flash of moonlight off a sea-raider's helmet as his head snaps back with one of your arrows in it.

Romantic, innit?

I have a 150 man army and it's divided into abt five groups and my tactics are simple but require careful organisation so

Group one move there and stand closer eight times - group two stand there and stand closer twice and group three go - oh - ok your already up to your armpits in enemy soldiers!

I think it's cos it's archer heavy - they are so vulnerable but pack such a punch - they need to be kept safe.

I might have missed something, but are you saying it's safer during daytime?

I really doubt that it makes a difference to the AI seeing how they're able to spot enemies in the thickest of fogs.

Being a new player, it took me some time to figure out there was no negative effect for not camping at night.  Thought one would take a moral hit or something.  Heck, humans need to sleep sometime.  Then it dawned on me as I noted everyone else is moving around constantly (no pun intended).  Agree that is a lot easier on *my* eyes to fight during the day, although a moonlight battle on snowy ground is pretty bright - too bad you don't know the weather before you decide what to do.  I usually just follow the intended target until early morning (dawn can be rough with the sun in your eyes) pausing occasionally to let the target group get ahead if necessary.  Lately, I've been the target more often that not though....  Camping at night can be dangerous - although it makes for an interestingly different battle setup than normal.  Of course you can fortify too (at least using Floris...) but that creates a morale hit.  Buggers do not like to dig - must be beneath their dignity.

I suppose what i am saying is that an archer heavy army at night takes time to put into the right positions  and when facing a rapidly advancing enemy - perhaps with a cavalry element then your boys don't have time to set up before they are getting smashed by enemy troops and while the computer seems to be able to see in the dark I can't so my long range and highly controlled type of stategy breaks down.

I suppose my strategy is dependent on too many critical conditions - the ability to see far being a major one.

There is the mini-map for that though. Is archer visibility reduced at night?
nope it's not. that's one unrealistic thing about the game, you can often see enemies better at night.

Aside from picking up the glint of the moonlight on their weapons/helmet I actually have a hard time seeing people at night... which is why like the OP I tend to wander around until dawn if I can to avoid the night fight.

You can up the gamma settings in video options to increase your own personal night visibilty. If you take it real far some of the darker colors will look a bit faded during the day (deep black looks kind of charcoal color), but then you can just fight when you want to fight.

I'll have to try playing a very bow or crossbow centric main character and see how bad this is. I don't find it too dificult to see my enemies from lance or sword distance even with realistically dark nights. (=

See I cannot even fight mele effectively at night...

Unless they have a "shiny" weapon I cannot really see when they are swinging... if their lords banner is one of the more dull or dark colored ones (I use custom banners) then I have trouble seeing if they have their shield up or not.

This is even with gama turned well up... maybe I will try a little higher though I don't care for how bright that would make things in the daytime.

This is a good thing though, isn't it? Adds some realism and sort of a penalty to fighting at night.

Me, I can see at night well enough, so there's basically no incentive for me to play realistically and not fight at night.

It just bugs me that the AI is completely unaffected by night/fog. Wouldn't it be awesome if you got into an incredibly foggy battle and you had to adapt to the situation with your tactic rather than just sit back with your shield up as all the archers still shoot at you with incredible accuracy?

I answer that with this:

While battles like that can be very fun (specially when the fog is so thick you cant even see the end of your sword  ) I hate them because the AI is no more or less efficient than they ever were.

It seems nighttime is always a full moon with zero clouds and very bright stars.
Plus all surface reflect way too much light so all the objects are very well lit.

There is also the fact that IRL colors are lost in low light due to how the human eye works, but that's not represented in the game.    Having night scenes in greayscale would probably a good step in the right direction.

I also noticed that turning the 'Auto-exposure' option off makes night time a bit darker.

For the sake of comparison, here's what it looks like for me (gamma set to default)

So night time is way better than daytime fog (can you spot the 2 trees ?  )

Night fighting rocks, bc you see less and that is cool bc it makes it harder.
BTW i had an awesome fight vs Vaegirs near Bariyye lately with sandstorm. I couldnt see 10 feet far, but luckily charged away Boyar Vlad before getting stuck in their infantry. Best weather event i saw so far.
