From 'Rescued Prisoners' and my 'Abolitionists' thread. I think it would be great to have a big refugee camp somewhere in between the Swadian and Vaegir lands. All the refugees farmers who are freed congregate there because they cant go back to their lands which have been ruined by armies and bandits. They would be a mix of Vaegir and Swadian and neutral like Zendar.
You wouldn't be able to do much there but past a certain point (say 20 game days - is the an event system in M&B?) the dark knights take notice and begin attacking the settlement. You can come along as a savior and organize the defence of the camp - the recruits are all basic peasants but free and plentiful - you are fighting dark knights so you need all you can get. This becomes a quest. If you defeat five or ten waves of dark knights then you win the quest and are rewarded by being called 'Lord Protector of the Free People' or whatever.
You can then go to the settlement which becomes a proper town (some kind of town cycling mechanism here) with its own blacksmith, tavern/baracks, church whatever. But you gain the anger of the Swadians and Vaegirs who hate the fact that a new independent power has emerged, kicked out of whatever army you're in. The Swadians and Vaegirs may try to conquer the town but you don't have to be there - the usual attacking force, defending force system comes in and the people organize their own patrols. You can recruit peasants and more advanced new units (eg. yeoman, yeoman archer, mounted yeoman - whatever) with their own upgrade tree.
What do you think? Other ideas?
