Hey all.

I'm starting a new project to create another Tolkien-inspired world for M&B.  It won't be purist-fest or a movie-whore, but somewhere in between.  I'm currently looking for... the entire team.  I desperately need graphically-oriented modders and a couple coders.

I'm keeping the actual content under wraps for now, but I can say that the storyline is something from Tolkien that was never actually fleshed-out, so I'm going to take certain liberties explaining how the events may have transpired.

It will be more of a single-player adventure than a tactical war-game and it's not based on events that happen during the Trilogy, so it should be distinctly different from TLD.

The Team so far
Me.

Why on earth are you doing this? We already have a lord of the rings mod. Why don't you just help out AW on that.

Amen to Yoshi,
If your gona make a LOTR mod, then you should either help AW or make a LOTR mod mostly based on movies.
You prolly wont get many ppl to sign up if its gona be reletivly the same as another large mod.

What kind of post is that?  Why does ANYONE make a mod?

To answer your question:
1. I like much of the design in the movies.
2. I don't like how much of the implementation of TLD.  I could go and whine about it on their board, but guess what their response would be.  Come on, just guess.
3. I don't expect I would have much creative input into TLD at this point, as most of it is already fleshed out and set in dwarvish stone.
4. This is going to be more of a traditional RPG than a war game.  There will be a couple heroes you can recruit, but no mass NPC recruiting.  Mostly it will be you against the world, set out on a specific mission from the beginning of the game, not wandering aroung going "so, uh, I'm supposed to wander around and, umm... kill things?"

And for the inevitable "why don't you just join RPG Mod?" question, I really, really detest flashy magic.  Really.  Don't expect to see any elves hurling fireballs around here.

Prehaps you can make an RPGmod-like rpg mod, where the main character can be one of the fellowship, and you must set out to destroy the, that wouldnt be too bad, but hard.

Actually, I've already got the plot synopsis worked out.  Have for about 7 years now.  It starts with you in whatever home-city you choose being given a quest by Gandalf.  There were certainly be other immortal or long-lived characters from the Trilogy involved, but it's not LotR as much as Tolkien.

Hey, there's point five:
5. It's Tolkien, not LotR.  Maybe I'll change the title.

Fine, go ahead. Let see how far you get.

Edit: Also, since when was it a free excuse to have a go at me just because I am a big player in this modding community. You don't understand how much comments about elietist mod community and that crap you just posted about RPGMod just piss me off. Do you really think that I want everyone to join RPGmod because i think its the best thing under the sun?! Since when was RPGmod even anything to do with this disgussion. If i want your oppinion on RPGmod's magic, which you haven't yet played, then you can post it in the RPGmod thread thanks very much.

Unless you just didn't notice i wrote another tutorial today to help people in the creation of new mods and resources, for their own mod. "Oh, look at that elitest Yoshiboy with his RPGmod, hiding all of this knowledge so that no one can knock him from the top spot." Please, unless you don't feel like sounding like an idiot please don't even bother to reply to me unless you are going to do it politely and respectfully.

Edit again: Ok then, i'll happy take resposibility if your mod manages to get no team members because some people might agree with me that its a little silly to be creating another LOTR mod.

Correct me if it's just a matter of inflection not translating to type, but that seems like an EXTREMELY snide and offensive retort.  What the hell?

At this point, I think the biggest impediment to the success of this mod is the extremely well-known and respected forum member making hostile and detrimental comments right at the top of page one of the thread.

*sigh*

I'm sorry if i made some comments about your mod which you think might inhibit it's sucess. I wish you the best of luck with it, you know that. I was very simply defending myself against your very comfrontal reply to my post. My post was more in suprize than anything else that someone would be creating something so similar to TLD. If you had simple replied politely outlining some of the features that would make your mod different to TLD, that or put them in your first post, then I would have known and we wouldn't have to be dealing with this whole business. Clearly your plans are different to what AW was doing, your reply simply hit me hard.

Woah.  Where is ANY of this coming from?  Let's start again:

-I have a mod I'm starting.
-It's based on Tolkien, but won't mirror TLD at all.
-I don't like flashy D&D-style magic permeating 90% of all the fantasy worlds out there, which is precisely why I like Tolkien and M&B so much.  Actually, it's not that I can't stand any world with flashy, in-your-face magic, (I used to be a mod on the WotC Magic: the Gathering forums, so I can't be THAT disinclined to magic.) I've just gotten sick of not being able to avoid it in the fantasy genre.

Since I posted "I'm starting a Tolkien mod" and instantly got the "Why? Just join TLD." response (paraphrase mine), I figured my "it's more like a traditional RPG" response would engender "Why? Just join RPG mod.", so I pre-emptively tried to answer that question.

I sincerely apologize if I mis-communicated and offended you.  I actually am greatly anticipating the release of your mod.

Just saw your reply while I was previewing this.  Water under the bridge?

Edit: just to head off any other miscommunication, I also very much like TLD, but there are certain things about it that I don't like.  Then again, the same could be said for vanilla M&B- that's why there ARE mods.  The fact is, if you don't create it, it won't be exactly the way you would have created it.

I think the problem is one with all modding communities eventually. I cringe whenever I see a new mod of any sort for M&B created now, let alone LOTR. There simply isnt enough of a talent base to support last weeks announced mods, let alone todays. The same thing happened to the total war community. People who previously worked on a large mod like EB left to start their own. In time the talent pool is spread so thinly over so many mods that development for all of them stretches into the years, often with little happening for months at a time.

Thats just modding though from what I can see. More ideas than recruits is the norm.

Good luck with your mod.

wow. flashy flashy.

Well..I'll probably just observe. As I can't do much except for concepts, very little modelling and little texturing.
But I wish you luck. I think having more similar themed mods is not much fun. But if your's is going to be different..well give it a shot.

AW: you have some points there. Agreed.

now this sounds like fun.
i think i know what you mean about TLD. never cared much for how they run things there, or some of the design they have chosen.
cant do much to help you. i only know how to do the modells and textures, not getting them into the game, and im to lazy to learn.
but i look forward to a bit more open minden lotr mod.
and i hope that there wont be any idea bashing in this mod thread... like some other mod.

Ok, no hijacking from tld folks and no flame wars. If people who dont like TLD want to vent, let them. Its on them.

I'm gonna jump to a huge conclusion and say that I think this will be a mod about the Fourth Age ("the new shadow"). the second guess is that it concerns the Blue Wizards. if the first is correct, I'll be glad to contribute in some form, in terms of models, and maybe a map, if needed. I'd suggest something different from what's in TLD  - maybe one that goes east/west rather than the north/south stretched one AW has- say, from the Shire to Esgaroth or so. I'd say from the Gray Havens to the Iron Mountains, but that's stretching it a bit too much, IMO.

like he said, it's a Tolkien mod, not a LOTR mod. the one whole year that encompases the LOTR/TLD/WOTR is only a small part of the at least four ages Tolkien had created.

hit me up on PM, I'm quite interested.

edit: just saw the post involving Gandalf, so I guess it's not a FOurth Age/New Shadow mod, as Gandalf is gone by then. still, I'm interested

Sorry to burst your bubble Eogan, but in the Tolkien stories...there is flashy magic.

I've read Lord of the RIngs, The Hobbit, and The Silmarilion, and there is quite a bit of it.

Though as a sugestion you could do a Silmarilion mod. It would be much different than TLD.
