weapon toggle button only works when your weapon is not drawn. release the attack then toggle and that'll work. or maybe your brother redid the controls for when he plays--happens to me sometimes.

no brother ... only X pressed ...

I can only thrust! even great axes (polerms no shield)

Well apparently I'm getting this problem now as well so help would be appreciated.

I think the patch just expanded how clipping works, so even if the slightest thing touches your sword, your swing speed either decreases to nothing or you get blocked from attacking.  Its horrible when you're surrounded by 50 peasants but you can't even swing a hand axe because they're touching your arm.  It's annoying on cavalry as well, when you ride in full speed and then swing with your 2H sword and then... nothing cuz the blade touched too early... although logically speaking a giant piece of steel coming in at a full horse speed should do quite some damage (also damage to your arm but let's ignore that).

It's not that even when standing all by yourself in a big empty space all it does is thrust  :???:

Oh that, yeah you gotta turn your head like 270 degree to the side to swing properly.  The area it considers to be thrusting is way too big right now.

what have you guys all set your attack direction to? camera angle, movement keys, or auto? i think that will solve it

Really, what's the best method of control over the attack direction?

Whatever it may be, resurrecting a month-old thread definitely isn't.

There's an Infantry Primer and a Guide to Dueling here.

Yeah, sure. And I don't mean to apologize, since the search function gave out THIS thread as the closest to my question amongst three others, and writing in either of them still didn't give ME any result. I've read both guides and while they're most well written and useful, neither of them mentions any advice on the attack direction choice method.
So, which is it?

So he is meant to start a new thread and get slammed from "search" hitlers?

to your question, play around with different styles, i think they all cater for different types of play, generally i use by "enemy direction" but this can sometimes be useless, especially if you have a weapon that does heaps of damage with swing and naff all with thrust.

That's just what I'm doing, trying different methods. Well, as of now I only got confused, especially since I'm using two-handed swords (which ARE - to me, at least - quite "picky" about the hits made with them). I'm gonna try the relative positioning method extensively for now. Though I think i made some progress with the "movement keys" method.
Thank you for you reply and support. Sorry if I've been a little "jumpy".

dunno if it's a feature, but if you hold down your 'move forward' button, it will lock one type of attack direction until you release and move forward again.

so if i first prepare a thrust (via both methods mouse movement/movement keys)and then i leave my finger on move forward without releasing, i will always be in thrust mode. likewise, if i set my first attack as right-to-left swing, it will only attack in that direction so long as i have not released move forward.

the game also has a default attack direction so be mindful of that.
