Are you sure about that?
Read click on the portrait of the companion in the menu, and then it should show the available to fill the "captain" slot.
However there should be an X to choose none, so you can have the companion assigned to the role that fit it better.

Also keep in mind that they get "autoassigned" based on what you have them assigned to in the party menu from my experience, so if you havent changed the default for companions - Infantry to some of the other choices ..

I guess op wasn't talking about assigning the captain to the group, but about simply putting companions into other group as troops.

In beta e1.7.0 you can't assign companions and troops in the party menu, and you can't even see the groups in the party screen. All troops and heroes are autoassigned to groups 1-4 based on their eqiupment. I had companions and family members assigned to group 8 in all of my saves, but after updating to beta e1.7.0 they were put into group 1 at the start of the first battle.

Here's a disscusion thread about this change in the game:

I hadnt noticed that in 1.70 in terms of the gear do the assigned role, but then assign them to better positions or lower risk(typically give'em a bow/crossbow?). (frontline infantry tends to die more frequent alas)
I found that if I have my companies in previous versions as ranged they tend to live longer.

as for the other part I'm not sure we're speaking passed eachother or its a failure to communicate, so I'll skip out on that one.

That said I typically dont use companions in the field as much, but just keep'em as governors, cost of investing in getting them up skilled vs risk of death "is too high".

It is an ok workaround, but in the big battles it is still not that safe. In the earlier versions of the game you could just assign companions into not used troop group via party screen and keep them at the safe distance in the battle, or even retreat them at the beginning of it.

You know that the game as an campaign option to disable clan members death chance?
If you choose the 100% reduction option, your clan members can not die in battles, simulated or mission battle.

Right, it is a nice feature and it solves the problem if you just don't want the death chance at all. At least we have that.

Altough, the problem remains if you want to have some death chance for heroes, but don't want them to die in some stupid way. It would be good to have better control of how you can use heroes in the battle. It was even already provided in the erlier versions of the game, but for some reason TaleWorlds get rid of it in beta e1.7.0.

That doesn't seem to work, I gave my companion a horse and bow+arrows, it won't move to horse archers.

Yes I know that.

That was more a suggestion for a tactic that dropped mortality rate for me when I play with it.

Like the op could perhaps use the tweak to dial down mortality chance or isntead if he wants to play with it on - try a different tactics.

That said I'm done with this thread now.
