Hello to one and all!
I've been aware of Mount & Blade for a while now but I never got around to purchasing it - it looks the part, has the 'open world' approach that I like and it fits in with my love of all things medieval and RPG's
Short of viewing the many screenshots and the videos on YT, I've really wanted to 'play' it to get a feel for the game. Well this morning I, for some unknown reason, dropped by the official website and behold! A full 'limited' demo version of the game for download! I'm so pleased about this as this has helped in two ways, the chance to see the game on my PC setup and as I've fully enjoyed the fresh approach the game brings, I've ordered it from my favourite online retailer (I'll have the fully boxed version on Thurdsay
I've been reading a few other members posts on the forum, and I do understand what they mean in terms of the 'graphics' of the game, but lets be a bit more objective with M&B...
We except that it has been developed by a small team without the massive resources that the likes of Crysis, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and FarCry 2 had during their development.
The fact that the game as a whole offers a 'new' concept in the terms of the 1st/3rd person 'Medieval' (not fantasy) FPS/RPG. The whole mechanics coupled with the graphics create more than just a game that sells itself on how it looks (not that anything should be taken away from the AAA titles I've just mentioned)
If TaleWorlds can produce a game that has a dedicated following despite it's humble beginnings and we all support their endevours the game has the potential to improve in areas that could be (look at the Warband update) But remember, how many people would be happy if the game required stupid amounts of hardware to be playable - its too easy these days to spoil a game by over engineering it - its all about balance.
I've been gaming since 8bit computers and some of my greatest gaming memories come from then and for those who know, graphics then were ultimately basic, but it was the 'playability and story' of a game that really counted. All things considered I quite enjoy the look and feel of Mount & Blade, sure its not full-on DX9/10, but in this case, it doesn't need to be.
One way to explain even better is for anyone interested to take a look at another 'indie' developed game from another genre I enjoy - the Space Sim (from the days of Elite and Frontier, to the current main game X3) Its called Evochron Legends - http://starwraith3dgames.home.att.net/evochronlegends/index.htm ...and as you will see, its got a massive following, not due to the graphics but what the game offers, and its fully supported by the sole creator of the game through the community of players who offer support and advice on how to improve the game further. For me this is where I see Mount & Blade, it may not be a AAA title, but it has something special and it runs like a dream on my PC, so I'd love to see the game supported more and more!
Regards
