New error when starting M&B (.702)

Whenever I load up Mount & Blade and start up the game, I get a popup with this error message:

"Generic application error. Enable debug output for detailed information. Switching to the reference rasterizer, a software device that implements the entire Direct3D feature set, but runs very slowly."

I hit OK on that, and I am presented with another message:

"Warning: Nothing will be rendered. The reference rendering device was selected, but your computer only has a reduced-functionality reference device installed. Install the DirectX SDK to get the full reference device."

Clicking OK to that will then give me:

"Generic application error. Enable debug output for detailed information. This sample will now exit."

Clicking OK there closes the whole thing.

This is really odd, since the game was working a few hours earlier.

Update: I reinstalled the game and rebooted, and things work now, but I would still like to know what happened.

Hey

I downloaded the latest version of M+B, but as soon as character creation was over and i entered the game-world, the graphics turned crazy and everything froze. So i updated my graphics driver (never having done this before i may have done it incorrectly).

Now when i start up the game i get the same messages as korodullin has outlined:

"Generic application error. Enable debug output for detailed information. Switching to the reference rasterizer, a software device that implements the entire Direct3D feature set, but runs very slowly."
"Warning: Nothing will be rendered. The reference rendering device was selected, but your computer only has a reduced-functionality reference device installed. Install the DirectX SDK to get the full reference device."
"Generic application error. Enable debug output for detailed information. This sample will now exit."

Ive tried re-installing and rebooting a couple of times, but nothing. Absolutely no idea what could be wrong. What im using:

Dell Dimension 8200 Intel
Pentium 4 CPU 1.80GHz
256 MB of RAM
NVIDIA Geforce2 MX/MX 400

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
