New computer

Ok, I got a little less than 600 USD to spend. I need a new motherboard, a an extra gig of ram, a new processor, and a new video card that's better than a radeon x800 xl. Preferably with shaders 3. Oh, and a case with good airflow.

Think I got enough cash? Anyone wanna help pick out parts? I'm re-using the RAM that I've got, and my motherboard needs to support IDE or w/e because that's what my current harddrive uses, but SATA would be nice, too, just in case I ever can afford a new one.

Well, you got enough for something, but definitely not enough for something decent for all of those part, 600 is really just enough for a decent cpu+maybe a graphics card with shaders 3.(you know shader 5 is the latest right?)

I'd but just some parts and make do with what you have now for other parts, because for £300 you'll not exactly be getting the best you could, you'd be going half assed on everything.

I built my computer in 2005, so anything would be an improvement. I'm not looking to get a top-of-the-line machine.

EDIT:

The trickiest part would be the videocard, I think. I need something that's decent but won't screw up my budget.

But if you're going to buy everything that's cheap and ****ty to cram it into your budget, you're going to be left with a computer that's pretty crappy now and outright ****e in a year and you'll want to upgrade again.

*sigh*

I'm kind of desperate for the parts now. My computer isn't working because the pins on my CPU fan broke. I could probably get it fixed or just buy another crappy single core processor, but what's the point? I don't make enough money that I'm going to be able to add to my savings any time soon. I make just about enough money to pay for my expenses. I'm looking for a better job, but as I said, I'm going to college, and a kick ass gaming machine isn't the top of my priorities.

Buy just a good motherboard, CPU and some cheap RAM then, wait for the GPU, then at least you'll have some good components.

I could do that. It's not much different than what I planned on, but seriously, I'm not likely to be able to buy anything new in a year anyway, not if I continue to buy games, and if I don't get a new video card, I won't be able to. I suppose it depends on the price.

8800GT, DFI lanparty, E6600 Core2Duo or whatever's the latest midrange for that price. You may even be able to get a 4 GB (2x2 gb) dual channel kit @ DDR2 800 for the Lanparty board.

$200 + $100 + $150 + $100 = ~$550

For the components he needs, $600 is just about right to get pretty good parts all around.

Ok, so here's what I've got in mind:

case

video
memory
motherboard
CPU

How's that? I make any stupid mistakes? And what about my motherboard? Is that 1 x ATA100 2 Dev. Max  going to work with my harddrive/dvd drive? How can I tell?

EDIT:
Scratch the case, I'll use the one I have. I think I can fix the ****ty airflow.

Yeah, IDE cables usually let you put two devices on them, so if that DVD & HDD are all you have, you should be fine.

I double checked the CPU & ram's compatibility with the motherboard- looks good.

If for some reason we both missed something, NewEgg has a good return policy, so I wouldn't be too worried. Enjoy your new stuff.

420 watts, I think, but I've no reason to believe it's any less ****ty than the case it came in. I think it aught to do, though.

Redcoat, Instag0, thanks for the help!

nuh uh...You'll need an at least 500W PSU incase you wanna risk everything blowing up.

EDIT: And if both your Disc Drive and Hard Drive are IDE that mobo wont do. I has only one IDE slot.

Uh, no. 420 W should be plenty. You're using mostly low-end parts, so I doubt you'll need a fancypants PSU.

****. My PSU has 20 pins and my motherboard needs 24. Now I have to wait for a new PSU to come in.

Ain't that just a *****....
