New Companions Project

Users who are viewing this thread

Hi everyone,

I apologize for inactivity in this sub-forum, but after I felt like "fulfilling my part" around here I decided to focus on other things, including university and assisting in the development of "Sword of Damocles" (which, partially thanks to me, will hopefully get out its new version relatively soon). The fact that the Berserk manga proceeds freakin' slowly is probably also a demoralizing factor   anyway, I kinda' feel inspired a bit so I might bring out a couple of new ideas (mostly new companions) in the following few days

PS: I also updated the first post in the topic to make things clear to everyone. Yes, for now the companions are at a "limit" of 30, BUT companions suggested after that limit breach may be used in future versions somehow, so I still advise everyone with good thoughts to post their character ideas

Considering one could exploit the bug where you can ''clone'' one of your companions (who itself is a bug - he's supposed to be a lord and never a companion) we don't really need new companions

You won't be able to garrison any of your companions in a future patch.  That should fix cloning.

HA ! You got served
Just kidding of course. But I doubt that any true player exploited the bug intentionally. Nevertheless, that patch will be certainly welcome for the sake of balance

Now, here's my new character suggestion. It's just one char (...yet), but a detailed one at that:

Jeremiah / Jarvis
„Couldn’t people just live in peace and understanding ?”
„Look ****, if everyone is an asshat why couldn’t I be one as well ?!”
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Nationality: Midland-Kushan (mixed)
Appearence: a young, somewhat thin but muscular boy of average height and brownish skin (not as dark as „pure” Kushans, but notably darker than average Midlandians). His left eye is blue while the right eye is green. His hair is black and cut short, plus there’s a very little beard-hair at the end of his chin. He wears a sort of studded leather armor reinforced by a couple of metal plates here and there, plus red shirt and black trousers.
Background: Jeremiah was born in a small Midland town next to Kushan borders as the son of a Holy See pastor and a converted Kushan woman. While the pastor’s good reputation prevented persecutions from adults in his environment, he was practically an outcast by other children because of his mixed blood. The teachings of his parents („be a good child”) were continuously confronted by the challenges of everyday life, especially later when boys of his age were mostly all getting married already while he was always rejected by girls. He was considering suicide but fate interfered in the form of a Kushan raid, his hometown getting burned down - but the raiders spared the local Kushan populace (mostly merchants). For a moment he was overjoyed over the cruel death of his oppressors, but soon after he beheld the decapitation of his father which caused him a breakdown. The Kushan spared him, but because he was not of pure Kushan blood he was taken slave. During one night, one of the slave drivers dragged him out of his cage and raped him. That event, combined with all his past experiences led to a breaking point - and a split personality, one half being that of a murderous psychopath. When it took control, he not only killed the rapist, but several other slaves and slave drivers as well amd broke free. For the next few weeks the two new personality halves struggled for dominance, eating and drinking little whatsoever, until eventually he (or they ?) met with a bandit who attempted to rob him. The violent half (calling himself Jarvis) beated the bandit senseless with bare hands but before he could have killed the guy, Jeremiah managed to take over and decided tp tend his wounds. When the bandit regained consciousness, it turned out he wasn’t entirely without honor, thanking him and said Jeremiah should join his gang, namely the Black Bastard Bandits (who were actually both brigands and mercenaries, depending on their situation). He escorted the boy back to his gang where the lesser-ranking members accepted him without question but the boss himself rejected him („We don’t need pussies !”). Jarvis took over again, brawling with the boss. Since he was in a pretty bad shape, the boss beated him to discipline but noted his potential (getting his own right arm broken during the short fight). He became member of the Black Bastard Bandits and soon after the two personalities came to a „compromise”: Jeremiah takes the lead, but Jarvis comes forth every time Jeremiah feels very offended or threatened. He travels with the Black Bastard Bandits ever since as a healer and warrior, hoping to find his place in the world.
Personality: since he has a split personality, it can be hard to get along with this boy. His peaceful half (the original Jeremiah) is calm, friendly and helpful, though pretty sensitive to a lot of things, ranging from his family background to social injustice. Ironically enough, he considers the gang of criminals he works with more sensible than „high society” in general. He despises bloodshed, though accepts it if it’s about defending the innocent. Jarvis is his complete opposite: he was a crazed psychopath to begin with, though since he got his behind kicked by the bandit boss and served in the gang for a while he learned some discipline and how to get along (more or less). Nevertheless, he’s a sarcastic, cynical and violent *******, critical towards the entire world. However, one who spends some longer time with Jarvis might notices desperation behind his endless anger, a hidden longing for peace perhaps. Ever since they both work for the Black Bastard Bandits, the two personalities made a compromise - Jarvis takes control only when Jeremiah feels very offended or threatened (usually prior to a battle). The reaction can be especially severe when it is caused by females. The two personalities are fully aware of each other and sometimes „debate” over things (swithing dominance suddenly several times in close succession and arguing with each other). These debates take place usually in an unconscious state (sleeping).
Combat style: Jeremiah rarely fights as this sort of thing is usually up to Jarvis, not to mention he acts as a medic for the gang by profession. On rare occasions, he hits or kicks people as a „warning”, but nothing else. Jarvis is an entirely other matter. He has a natural sense for combat in general, both armed and unarmed, so it didn’t take a long time for him to learn the basics or fighting after joining the Black Bastard Bandits. He’s skilled in the use of lots of weapons, including polearms, swords, maces and throwing axes and javelins, preferring to take multiple weapons with him to the battlefield to deal with different situations (he always takes a spear and a bastard sword, the rest is optional), along with a wide round shield and a nasal or „nordic” helmet (the sort with the eye-plates which give the helm a mask-like appearence). He isn’t actually much stronger than any experienced soldier, but he reached this level by a very young age and is only improving; God knows how capable he will be in a matter of a few years...

NOTES:
- a split personality offers lots of twists and philosophical themes to exploit. I never really understood why Kentaro Miura never attempted to use such a character in his stories. If you think about it, lots of authors "misuse" this mental illness: in the far-east, it is often reserved for comic relief, while in the west it's taken as something entirely dark and vile. I came across very few writings which tried to approach it with a realistic, medically professional attitude. My own attempt, while not professional (as I'm not a doctor), was based on actual research so it's not just mere rambling.
- in-game, the Player should have the chance to alter his personality. If he/she always goes soft on him, Jeremiah will be dominant (reduces fighting skills but boosts leading/healer skills), and might chickens out of fighting (refuses to go to battle, etc). If he/she acts always rudely, Jarvis will be dominant (not quite the best leader, but will get a freakin' high bonus to fighting stats) and eventually rebels. If he/she takes the middle path, Jeremiah and Jarvis eventually compromise and form a balanced personality together (no effect on stats, but afterwards he'll be completely loyal to the Player).

...so ?

I love characters with a split personality.  They always have that "what is he going to do next?" to worry about.  Stuff like this makes me with M&B characters could have facial expressions.  It's good that he is a bandit.  I don't have many bandit companions right now.  It is weird that Muira doesn't have any characters with a split personality.  Although you could argue that Gutts himself has a slight case of this.  But Gutt's two sides aren't hugely different from each other.  On one hand he is a hardened killer.  But when he goes berserk he is even worse than that and will kill anyone that gets close to him.

Jeremiah is not a typical bad guy. If you add the necessary triggers though, the Player could "nurture" him into a killing machine, but then he'd rebel sooner or later (cos' he will hate the Player). Even though he's with brigands, the Black Bastard Bandits aren't just plain criminals either, after all, they were acceptive towards the boy - plus their name was meant to sound silly. Imagine them as a sort of comic relief villains who you can hate but don't want to die - kind of like the Turks in Final Fantasy 7

I'm not sure if Gutts has a case of split personality. I think the Hellhound is more of an evil spirit which feeded on the innermost doubts, fears and desires of Gutts and thus eventually became a part of him. If you think about it, originally the Hellhound started out as a mere ghostly figure, which eventually grew more "stable" and dog-like. Plus it always appeared during nighttime, when the spirits would come forth due to the Brand anyway, but I think he couldn't become really "dominant" and gained strength very slowly because he was just one out of many spirits, until Schierke warded Gutts and so the Hellhound was the sole spirit that could approach him (and thus it was easier for him to feed and grow stronger and more manipulative). This is just my suspect though, I could be completely wrong. We just have to wait and see.

Anyway, I plan to add a couple of "negative" companions for Players who prefer going evil   stay tuned.

Mieru
"...Gods? there are no such things...only demons"
Race: Human
Gender:Female
Age:15
Appearance:razz:iercing red eyes, pretty face devoid of emotions, short black hair, small build, a small mark on her forearm
Background:Born in a Kushan village, her father was one of the elites, a famous general. She loved her father greatly. One night, on her 8th birthday, the local villagers saw her house on fire, and a crying Mieru holding her father's custom-made Kushan horse sword. As some of the villagers picked up the courage to go near her, a great monstrous figure waving multiple appendages appeared from the burning ruins of Mieru's house. Of course all of the villagers hauled ass immediately. Those who had gone nearer to the girl and therefore was nearer the daemon, as they called it, heard it cackling madly about its daughter.Mieru was never heard from again, until several years later. Some of the villagers recalled that some shady men were asking around about Mieru's father. Soon, they conclude that assassins came to murder the great general(Mieru's father), but finding him too formidable, they summoned a daemon to kill the general instead. "Pity it had to happen on her birthday," the village elder said."Her father bought her a curious egg adorned with a human face, albeit jumbled up".

She learned to use the Kushan horse sword very quickly. After several run ins with con men and disguised demons, she concludes only herself is to be trusted. However, after meeting an old man in somewhere near Rahna, she amended that only herself is to be trusted fully, the rest will have to prove themselves. She does not know what she should do, only that she must keep moving, and survive..

Personality: Very distrustful of anyone. Will only trust someone who has proven him/herself to her, even then she will not trust them fully. A quiet type, she will kill anyone who approaches her too quickly or in a threatening way, be it men, women or even children. She is utterly devoid of emotions. She still fears of the demon that appeared in the burning ruins of her house years ago. Often touches the mark on her forearm absentmindedly.

Fighting style: She still wield her father's custom made Kushan horse sword, even though some wonder where she got the strength to wield it. She has some skill with the flintlock rifle (due to the teachings of the old man near Rahna). She would often stand still and shoot with a remarkable speed though not exceptionally at accuracy. If it came to close combat (which often happened), she would swing the sword with ease, speed and strength unheard of in a girl her age(and stature). She had sliced many enemies cleanly in halves, many of them heavily armored. Of course this is all rumors and gossips right? Like those people who claim she was haunted.

Hope this is alright.

oookay...since BP didnt go Berserk and devour me, i figured i'd post another char just for the heck of it.

The Maiden
"...death hold no power over me.."
Race: Unknown, presumed human(or was one)
Gender: female.
Age: unknown

Appearance: Usually seen in a black robe with with an intricate white(maybe red?) patterns on the right side. Wears a smooth mask with only the eyeholes.(kinda like Vega's mask in Street fighters) and a ruby necklace.

Background:Unknown. She has been spotted everywhere, often near a lord/lady(w/e) who is strangely powerful (Apostles.Who else?). Rumors spread of her being killed multiple times, the most reliable source from an honorable knight. It was a strangely foggy night when she appeared. Knives hissed through the air, killing two of the knight's companion. She drew out a dagger and rushed the knight. He claims he chopped off her head then. he even examined the remains. Removing her mask, he says she was as beautiful and as pale as the moon itself. The knight was killed a few days after the assassination of his lord(rumored to have a taste for virgin blood). She has also been seen randomly helping people, for instance defending a village from trolls while all the men are out. Most of the women would verify this but all the men dismissed it as just daydreaming. what woman can defend against trolls?

Personality:Cold, violent when the needs arise. Apparently undying, until the ruby necklace is destroyed. has a strange tendency to follow marked people, though all of then she met dies of stupidity, idiocy and fear of the evil spirits. speaks not at all, unless she feels she can trust the person.

Fighting style: A dagger, slightly curved and the tip turning back at a sharp angle to form a hook, ensuring a painful death and disembowelment if stabbed in the stomach area. And several throwing daggers of course.

OK, that's it. A short description of her. the full story will take a few pages, as will the full story of the other chars i made, but I'm not gonna write them. who will read it anyways?

If Guts happens to have new canon companions, does that mean some existing non-canon companions have to be removed?

I don't think so, no. Unless the engine itself goes to hell if the new canon companions are implemented, I imagine the whole process would be less about putting them in and more about how you would go about putting them in.

...why does everything I say come out horribly perverse?

Too many companions and you'll have to capture new territory and hand it off just to house them all, so they don't take up all the seperate troop slots in your party (As I remember it was sort of a problem for me last time I played RotB)

Appearence: an man of avarage height in a napoleonic sergant-style clothing with a conquistador-style helmet. Determined face with shoulderlength brownish hair and blue eyes.
