New Beta Tester - Compiled 'Bug' List Thus Far

Users who are viewing this thread

Hi there! I first would like to thank Armagon and others for providing such an interesting new game to us beta testers! That being said I have a compiled a listing of things I have noticed in-game that may help in the development process. I am a Flash game developer and understand the process of bug testing and beta versions of games so I reserve most of my heavy judgements until after the full release of Tale Worlds.

First thing I noticed in-game was that the interface design seems sparse and incomplete. I only say this from the perspective of a game designer myself... this may not be the opinion of all the player base.

Secondly, I noticed in the Character window that some of the skill names' spacing is off and looks a bit awkward.

The next thing I noticed is that when selling quite few items to vendors, they run out of inventory space and the only way that I could get them to reset their inventory space was to quit the game and then restart it. On a related note, when you do max out their inventory, there is no way to cancel the trade... so if you click one too many items into their inventory, you basically have to buy something that you do not want just to get out of the trade... doing so makes you lose money.

This is a battle-related problem. I started the game as a hunter, so I started with high archery. Because of this the bow and arrow came up first in my inventory. This all makes sense to me, however it allowed me to notice a bug and this bug is that when you enter a battle and have the bow equipped as the FIRST inventory slot... it MAKES YOU draw your bow and fire an arrow right away, right when the battle is initiated. So if I start a battle with the bow and arrow -- I ALWAYS lose one arrow right off the bat -- unless I manage to hit the defend button before the arrow goes off, but there must be good timing to do so.

This is another archery related bug, when riding your horse and using archery from the back of the horse. If you dismount the horse while having your bow drawn, you get off the horse -- but continue to draw the bow as if you are still on the horse. This is really weird because when in that strange floating position, you cannot see yer enemies at all. So the exact steps it took to get there were:

1. Be mounted on a horse.
2. Draw your bow.
3. Look down until you see the "Dismount" command come up.
4. Dismount you horse.
5. At this point, when you try to aim, you will notice that you are floating in midair and have HUGE problems playing the game this way.

Also, I think the interface for viewing your party could be a bit more intuitive... it is often times difficult for me to figure out how to view my party members individually. Is it possible to outfit your unique party memebers as well? Like the guy who you give the padded cloth to... it hard for me to know if he is getting better or if he is just staying the same. If anyone has any insight into how to see his details, please let me know.

I would also suggest creating a documentation PDF or document of some sort... explaining a bit more about controls and such. In addition, in your website some of the images in the "Main" section appear to have a VAST amount of pixelization... makin them almost unviewable. Also, the "Screenshots" section does not display any of the image thumbnails, this should be a simple fix and would make your site seem a lot more professional. If you need any consulting on this, just let me know.

That is everything I have noticed thus far. But wanted to make mention of a few more things that seem a bit odd to me. In a lot of the vendor buildings, like the Inns and such... it strikes me as odd that there is little to no furniture or items in their shops. It makes that game feel somewhat incomplete. I might suggest adding counters, tables, items (like their wares) and possibly torches or lighting of some sort. I think this would do a lot to enhance the game from a 'realism' perspective.

But yes, I really like what you have done and I think it is quite amazing that you two have done what you have done on just two people. Great work!!!) I think that once you have done some work with the interface, done more work with graphical and model details and worked out a lot of the bugs this game will be a hit! Let me know if you ever wish to hook up via email or instant messenger to discuss playability or graphical issues and I would be more than happy to hold a discussion with you two.

I look forward to seeing this game come to fruition! Great work and thanks again!

In the world map, click on a hero and then click on "talk" in the middle panel. The rest is fairly clear. I agree that the current setup is not intuitive, and should be changed.

As for the increase in content, I'd be surprised if it wasn't the case that the developers are not only aware of the issue but have been plannig to flesh these things out for quite some time.

Also, read further down this forum, issues such as the floating bowman thing have been brought up before.

You don't need to quit the game. After half a day or so, some items will have been sold, and there will be space available again. Also, there are three shops in town. I doubt that you have so much that the three of them can't handle it. As far as having to buy something when the shop's inventory is full, you can just take back something you sold with no cost penalty.

How do you click on a hero in the world map? He is in my party... is it a right click to get a GUMP? Sorry, I very strongly feel that this interface needs to be tweaked... it is very difficult to understand without a LOT of practice.

Yes, I am sure that they are aware of it... I am just trying to let them know that we ARE noticing that it seems sparse.) No better way to let the devs know than to say so. ;oP

Sorry about that, it was one of the ONLY ones that I did not read in the whole forum... oops! Hehehehe.

Actually (believe it or not) I did in fact FILL all three in one town up! LOL -- I understand that the timer may be built into the game -- which is fine with me. It is mainly that there is no way to cancel a trade before it goes through. I STRONGLY believe that there should be a cancel option. Any thoughts from anyone else?

Thanks for the tips though Tiedye!)

Actually, a cancel button wouldn't be a bad idea, and probably wouldn't be too difficult to implement.

Lascivius, hit "P" to bring up your party screen on the world map. Then click on the name of the character you want to talk to. Then click "talk". You can access your party members' inventories and stat sheets from there. Of course, this only applies to unique characters, not basic units.

Thank you so much!) You've been a great help! Understood about the Unique characters thing.

And I think yer right a cancel button would be helpful and also not that hard to implement. Just in case you ROYALLY screwed something up. LOL

Having the stores only hold so much makes sense. What are they gona do, pile the extra goods in the alley for someone to steal?

Its the same thing as them having a limited amount of cash. I think they are both good the way they are.

Point taken... I agree that going for the utmost realism is a good idea. I am only concerned that when they DO fill up that you can run into issues with not being able to sell things properly. For instance, as I stated above, once they do fill up -- if you accidentally or unwittingly drop another item onto the sale window -- the only way to get your money back is to remove an item that you already sold. It is just bad logic is all... there should be a cancel option. My issue is not with the vendors filling up... just to clarify.) Hope that makes sense.

Actually, if you hold down the ctrl key and left click on items to sell, once the store's inventory is full, you'll find you can no longer sell an item, so you don't get a problem trying to cancel a sale.

Thanks for the tip, but how the heck are players supposed to know that one?!? Hehehe. It is good that that is built into the game... but wowzahs... it is really annoying if you STILL get stuck in that trade window...

how should any 1 know that?? hehe

do it say it sumwear or just sumthing you found out?

I just guessed it since the same control exists in Diablo.

A manual for the game would be nice, but I dont think armagan wants to spend time on that untill the game is finalized, otherwise he would simply have to rewrite large chunks of it.

...that and most programmers hate documenting.
