Never give up, never surrender!

If anyone actually recognizes the reference I made in the title, let me apoligize now for making it. That done, let's talk about this little matter low hit points. Right now, if your hit points have dropped below a certain number, you no longer have the option of going into battle yourself, and you can only send your troops in without you. This is enough of a sting when you have the alternative to simply withdraw, but what about when your line of retreat is cut off? You can A.) Send your troops in to take horrendous casualties for some reason, or B.) Surrender and lose your whole force, with the exception of inept but lovable Borcha. I don't waste my time with Marnid.

This just doesn't seem right. If you're conscious enough to run, to surrender, to do whatever, then you're conscious enough to fight. Is it dangerous to go into battle with only 1 hit point left? Absolutely. But as the commander it's your call. If need be, you can just stay back and hope your troops can hack it. They seem much more competent with you there, in any case. Thus, I suggest letting the player return to battle for the next round, whatever his condition.

Unless you get knocked out in the previous round, in which case you shouldn't be able to go back in. Actually, if you get knocked out in the previous round you should never be able to join the next round of battle. As it is now, with a decent first aid skill you can get knocked out and jump back into battle in the next round.

But if you successfully make it through a round, I'd agree that you should be able to continue into the next round regardless of what your hitpoints are.

Well, I see what you're saying. Realistically, a hit that knocks you out should have you out for the rest of the fight, and that's still diminishing the real effects it would have. Hell, the fact that a crossbow bolt to the head just knocks you out is ridiculous. That said, I think realism should be compromised one more time with regards to you coming back for the next round. Sure, leadership counts for something, but without you in there, your guys just seem to drop like flies without you, even against vastly inferior units. In battle, you can be on the other side of the map, and they still clean house as long as you're in there. It's inexplicable, so I'd propose that until this is corrected, you be allowed to be there, if only as a mascot.

Oh, and I'm sorry, Arathiel. I don't know how I missed that. I usually read these posts quite dutifully.

I've noticed there are times when, despite still being alive, you can't throw yourself into the fray and only have the option of letting your troops fight without you. So it's due to having low hitpoints?

In that case, I agree with what your suggestion. Sure, it's dangerous, but I think we should have the option of risking it and entering battle all the time unless we're unconscious/dead.

I believe that if you are below 20% it won't let you fight. If Borcha or Marnid are below 50% I don't think they'll enter the battle.

The point of the surrender and lose your army thing is that you actually have something riding on the outcome of a battle. You shouldn't be able to go up against enemies many times your size without the possibility of being reamed once in a while.

You lose your army anyway if you get knocked out of the battle, then your guys get creamed in the after battle simulation. But you shouldn't have to lose them without trying to keep them alive.

Wasn't 'Never give up, never surrender!' in Galaxy Quest?

Yes, yes. Don't judge me!
