make a texture in (my personal favourite photoshop) or paint

and then save it as a bitmap and "import image" in wings and the go select the first faces you want to texture, right click (the bottom) click UV map, and then force segmenting... once you choose the numbers for them (so they are divided in the conitnue part)
press "continue"
then choose what part of the tex you want to use on those faces (place the face over that part) and the deselect "space" and you should see a change on the model, and then do the same step for any other part of the model until its finally all done (i suggest you first try this on a cylinder, because of a fair number 0f faces,) and then select some sides and colour them,...
NOTE:when you import the image you should see it on a window to the right (forgot the name sorry!) and then seect the first one that says cube i think... right click and if you already force segmented it you should see a funny tex with loads of letter in diff colours... right click on the cube auv delete that texture and drag'n'drop on the cube auv thing and then continue with the texting
This is all shortened, the process takes a bit longer than it takes you to read this
